James Ward v Vasek Pospisil Head to Head

There has been one meeting between Ward and Pospisil before this and that had come in the third round of the 2015 Wimbledon where Pospisil had won a five-setter, 8-6 in the final set.

Before that they had also faced off in a Challenger in 2011 which Ward had won, and then played each other in the qualifiers of Eastbourne in 2017. Again, Pospisil had walked away to a victory.

Ward Hoping for a Better Showing

It was in 2015 that Britain’s Ward hit his career-best ranking of 89th in the world. Since then he has constantly slid down the charts, so much so he was outside the top 1000 by 2017, after which he looked to make his climb back.

The very next year he had reached 186th and then a recent-high of 169th in 2019 was followed by another couple of seasons being away from the sport or struggling to win matches while playing.

This season is another such example. The 34-year-old has played just four competitive matches, losing in the opening qualifier at two Challenger tournaments and in the second qualifying round of the Queen’s Club tournament.

As a wild-card player he now gets a main draw entry and will be up against a player himself looking for form but can he carve out an upset?

Pospisil in Strife This Season

Not that Pospisil has played a lot of matches this season, but the fact he has won just one of the six he has played speaks volumes about the kind of contest we are going to be watching.

Pospisil, who had finished the previous season on the high of having made the final of the Sofia Open, looked to have put all the behind him this year. He started off at Australian Open where he was sent packing by Daniil Medvedev in straight sets and then won what turned out to be his only win of the year – against the 131st-ranked Chris O’Connell.

Defeats to Denis Shapovalov, Marton Fucsovics, Mackenzie McDonald and Marcos Giron followed soon after.

The last of these losses came at Halle about a week ago with Giron triumphing in two tie-breakers in that opening round.

Can he now shrug his poor start off and defeat a player who has fallen off the rankings cliff?

Ward v Pospisil Prediction and Tip

It’s not surprise to see Pospisil starting out as an overwhelming favourite but the match could go long with multiple games in it.

Tip: Pospisil to win AND Over 21.5 games in the match: 5/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
