Kovinic Looking to Draw Inspiration from Charleston

It’s been a good year for World No. 60 Danka Kovinic, who reached her third WTA final this year but failed to win a maiden title, after losing to Veronika Kudermetova in the Charleston final.

The 26-year-old Montenegrin, who lost the finals in Tianjin in 2015 and Istanbul in 2o16, reached her first WTA 500 final at the Charleston Open with wins over Gabriela Talaba of Romania in the first round, Leylah Fernandez in the second, third seed Petra Kvitova in the Round of 16, Yulia Putintseva in the quarterfinals and 12th seed Ons Jabeur in the semifinal, before falling to the 15th seed Russian in straight sets.

Kovinic comes to Bad Homburg with an 11-10 record in 2021. She followed her runner-up finish at the Volva Car Open with a run to the semifinals at the WTA 250 in Charleston the following week. A former top 50 player, Kovinic defeated Bulgaria’s Viktoriya Tomova, and Americans Lauren Davis and Shelby Rogers to reach the final four, before being outplayed by Ons Jabeur.

Kovinic, who has never gone past the second round of a major, is yet to establish herself on grass. She has not won a match at Wimbledon having made three first-round exits in the past.

Anisimova Hoping for Consistency

Facing Kovinic in the first round will be American Amanda Anisimova, who is not in the best of forms this year.

The 19-year-old, who reached a career-high ranking of 21 in 2019, is 7-8 this year, having won two matches in a row just once, in Parma, where she defeated Jasmine Paolini and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova to reach the last eight, before falling to Cori Gauff in straight sets.

The 2019 Copa Colsanitas champion and 2018 Japan Open runner-up, Anisimova was a semifinalist at Roland Garros two years, but has lost a bit of form over the last two years.

She has made just one semifinal since 2020, falling to Serena Williams in Auckland last year.

On grass, she reached the quarterfinal in Mallorca and the second round at the Wimbledon in 2019 and would look to better those results this time around. However, she didn’t have a great start on grass courts this season, falling to Alize Cornet in the first round in Berlin last week.

Kovinic v Anisimova Prediction and Tip

Kovinic has more experience than Anisimova and is also higher-ranked, but it’s the younger pro who will hold the edge on grass. Although, Anisimova has been inconsistent this year, she will hope to get some form going in Bad Homburg. Expect the match to go the distance.
