22-year-old Alastair Gray is playing in just his second tournament on the 2021 ATP Tour. His last stint was the Nottingham Challenger a couple of weeks ago where he fell in the first qualifying round to Viktor Troicki.
Prior to this, he played in an ITF event in Egypt back in November 2020. He fell in the final match of the qualifying rounds to the Indian Arjun Kadhe.
In Eastbourne, Gray started as a qualifier and beat Kwon Soon-woo in the first round of the qualifiers. After that, all that was left for him to do was beat James Duckworth and he’d find himself with a ticket to the main draw. He fell to the experienced Australian in straight sets.
However, by the virtue of the Lucky Loser rule, Alastair Gray has been awarded a main draw entry. With this, he has assured himself of 20 ranking points – the most he has picked up in a tournament in quite some time.

Ivashka in with Experience and Momentum
Currently ranked World No. 87, Illya Ivashka has made it to the main draw here in Eastbourne after breezing through the qualifying rounds.
The Belarusian has had a similar run in the ATP Halle and ATP Stuttgart over the last couple of weeks but has never made it past the first-round matches. In Halle, he fell to Roger Federer in the opening main-draw game while in Stuttgart, he incurred a similar fate against Peter Gojowczyk.
That said, Ivashka has had a few tournaments where he has been just brilliant by his standards. In Marbella and ATP Barcelona, he reached the quarterfinal and the second round respectively. In Munich, he delivered his best run of the season and possibly, his career by reaching the semifinal as a qualifier.
En route to the semis, the 27-year-old beat the German No. 1 Alexander Zverev in three sets. He had a similar run in Geneva too where he overcame the qualifying games and reached round two, only to lose to Grigor Dimitrov.
Ivashka v Gray Prediction and Tip
The fact that Ilya Ivasha is ranked a good 900+ places ahead of his British adversary should tell us why he will be starting this game as the favourite. Yes, Ivashka hasn’t got that many wins or trophies under his belt, he still loses in the opening rounds. But against an inexperienced adversary like Gray, that alone should give him all the ammunition needed to win here.
