Dominic Thiem v Adrian Mannarino Head to Head

It will be their ninth meeting and Thiem has dominated the rivalry with an 8-0 record.

The first two matches between the two, in Miami and Paris in 2015, needed a deciding third set. Since then Thiem has won all six in straight sets, the last last three of which came in majors.

Thiem On A Three-Match Losing Streak

Austria’s Dominic Thiem will return to action for the first time since making a shock first-round exit from Roland Garros last month.

The 2020 U.S. Open champion is the second seed in Mallorca and will begin his campaign in the second round on Tuesday after receiving a first-round bye. The 27-year-old comes into the tournament with an average 9-8 record in 2021, with his best being a semifinal appearance in Madrid, where he lost to Alexander Zverev in straight sets.

A 17-time champion from 28 finals at the ATP level, Thiem is on a three-match losing streak, with his last win coming over Marton Fucsovics in the Round of 32 in Rome. He was edged out by Lorenzo Sonego in the Round of 16 and then beaten in straight sets by Cameron Norrie in Lyon.

His carried his woeful form to the French Open, where he had a meltdown after taking a two-sets-to-love lead over Pablo Andujar in the first round. The Spaniard made a remarkable recovery to win 4-6, 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 6-4 and hand Thiem his first-ever first round defeat at the Paris major. After two second-round finishes at Roland Garros in his initial years, Thiem made it to back-to-back semifinals 2016 and 2017, reached consecutive finals in 2018 and 2019 and was a quarterfinalist in 2020.

Thiem, who also reached the final of the Australian Open in 2020, has never gone beyond the fourth round at Wimbledon. He reached that stage in 2017 but was beaten by Tomas Berdych in five.

Since then he made two first round exits in 2018 and 2019. Overall, the Austrian is 14-14 on grass and claimed the title in Stuttgart in 2016. It was a massive achievement as he rallied to defeat Roger Federer in the semifinals and then overcame a first-set deficit in the final as well to defeat Philipp Kohlschreiber and lift his only title on grass.

Mannarino Knocks Out Struff

Thiem will face France’s Adrian Mannarino in the second round on Tuesday. The 32-year-old lefty defeated Germany’s Jan Lennard-Struff in the first round on Sunday.

Saving all four break points that he faced, Mannarino converted his only breaking opportunity in the second set to wrap up the one-hour-and-24-minute contest 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

The World No. 42, who has won one title from 10 finals, has not had a great year so far. He is 7-16 after Sunday’s win and his best performances include a run to the third round at the Australian Open and a quarterfinal finish in Singapore.

This is Mannarino’s third tournament on grass this year. He lost to Australia’s James Duckworth in the first round in Stuttgart, but won his first round match at Queen’s, beating Britain’s Liam Broady in straight sets. He eventually fell to Dan Evans in the Round of 16.

Overall, Mannarino has a solid 51-36 record on grass, winning his only title on the surface at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2019. In addition he also had two runner-up finishes in Antalya in 2017 and 2018.

Mannarino has reached the fourth round of majors on three occasions and all those were at Wimbledon, where he reached the Round of 16 in 2013, 2017 and 2018.

Thiem v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Thiem has dominated this rivalry, and will have the psychological advantage going into this one, despite his poor run of late. Expect the Austrian to advance to the quarterfinals.
