Elena Rybakina v Anastasija Sevastova Head to Head

Rybakina and Sevastova have never faced each other before this.

Rybakina Conquers Svitolina

Elena Rybakina reached just her second career WTA quarterfinal on grass with a thoroughly deserved straight-sets win over the second seed Elina Svitolina. Rybakina’s high-quality 6-4 7-6 win over the Ukrainian was a match determined by very few margins.

Both players held serve continuously with very little resistance until at 4-all in the first set. Svitolina was the first to crack under the monstrous return of the Kazakh. Rybakina manufactured the first break point of the match and she duly converted.  The World No. 21 would go on to serve for the first set.

The second set was a battle of wits. Svitolina created her own opportunities to get back into the contest. She had nine break point chances, but she only managed to convert two of those, which ultimately gave her a tall order to restore parity.

Rybakina regained her composure despite dropping her serve twice, and crucially while serving for the match at 5-4. Svitolina forced a tiebreak, but it was the towering Kazakh who dominated it from start to finish.

With this result, Rybakina will have a chance to equal her best appearance on grass (semifinals in Hertogenbosch) when she takes on the crafty Latvian Anastasija Sevastova.

Sevastova Defies Odds Yet Again

The theory that technique trumps power while playing on grass has never been more evident. Anastasija Sevastova’s march to the quarterfinals in Eastbourne proved that theory certainly holds a lot of water.

Sevastova, who has been given a second bite of the cherry into the main draw as a lucky loser, beat the one-dimensional Ukrainian teenager Marta Kostyuk in a three-set battle in her opening-round match.

And the bookmakers placed her as an overwhelming underdog against the more talented teenager Coco Gauff in the second round. Sevastova had previously mastered the young American on her own patch at last year’s US Open, and she extended her unblemished winning record over Gauff with a comeback victory from the brink of defeat.

After dropping the first set 6-4 following a horrible tenth game, the Latvian bounced back in impressive fashion. She trailed 5-2 in the second set, but somehow reeled off five straight games to shock Gauff.

Sevastova’s dexterous slice drew errors from the usually reliable Gauff ground strokes. The experienced World No. 61 took control of the match when Gauff produced two untimely double faults at 2-2 in the decider.

Rybakina v Sevastova Prediction and Tip

Sevastova has made the most of this second opportunity. But after playing three bruising three-setters, how much is left in her tank? This looks to be Rybakina’s moment to shine on the grass.
