Federer Begins Uncertain But Hopeful Wimbledon Campaign

Eight-time Wimbledon champion Roger Federer returns to the grass courts of the All England Tennis Club with plenty of questions from himself and from others. The Swiss is eying a ninth title, something he fell short of with two championship points in the 2019 final against arch rival Novak Djokovic.

Federer returned to the tour earlier this Spring after two knee surgeries and associated rehabilitation that kept him out of the tour for 14 months amidst the Covid-19 pandemic. The Swiss returned to the tour at the Doha ATP 250 in March but has played sparingly still and comes to Wimbledon with a 5-3 record in the eight matches he has played.

While the former world number one has mentioned he was pleased to make it through the first three rounds at the French Open before he withdrew for precautionary purposes with the ensuing grass court season, he has also alluded to how everything feels a lot harder on the tour since his return with the surgeries.

Losses of the nature of those to Pablo Andujar on the Geneva clay and Felix Auger-Aliassime especially on the Halle grass are atypical for someone like Federer and he has expressed extreme disappointment on his attitude and play on the latter occasion.

However, Federer returns to his favorite venue where he announced his arrival defeating Pete Sampras in 2001 and accomplished everything there is and more here winning the title eight times, calling it the pinnacle of his season and career.  Experts believe this may yet be the place where the season turns around for the Swiss maestro.

Good Run at Mallorca Gives Confidence To Mannarino

Frenchman Adrian Mannarino has been on the circuit for a decade and a half during which his only ATP title came on the grass courts of Rosmalen in 2019, the same season when he also made the finals of the Zhuhai Championships and the Kremlin Cup.

Mannarino’s best performance at a Grand Slam has been the fourth round on three occasions here at Wimbledon, in 2013, 2017 and 2018.

It has not been the best of seasons for the Frenchman with plenty of early losses on the hard, indoor and clay tournaments, which resulted in him seeking to gain confidence on the grass by playing at Stuttgart, Queens and Mallorca. Although he did not have the best of runs at either of Stuttgart or Queens , he was aided by a Dominic Thiem injury making the final four at Mallorca before bowing out to big serving American Sam Querrey.

Mannarino will be aware of the uphill task against Federer in the opening round at Center Court but will hope some nerves from the maestro may play a part in assisting him as well.

Federer v Mannarino Prediction and Tip

Mannarino is an accomplished grass courter and has met with success on grass earlier and done well this week at the ATP 250 in Mallorca. But, the Swiss has played enough times to know how to approach this opponent.

Although Federer comes in low on confidence, match practice and expectations, this is a match he should not have too much trouble with. Expect the Swiss maestro to prevail in straight sets.
