Monfils Lost to Purcell in Eastbourne

Gael Monfils is seeded at a surprisingly high of 13th at this year’s Championships, but that only tells half the story. The Frenchman has endured a torrid time on tour this season, winning a meager two matches at 10 tournaments.

But thanks to Wimbledon’s decision to factor the ATP rankings in seeding the players this year, Monfils has found his name thrust among the top-tier players. But in the ATP Race (which factors points earned during the current year), Monfils is outside the top 200. These stats had the former World No. 6 questioning his pro future.

Monfils’ barren run without a win had hit eight matches dating back to last season, but he finally snapped it in Lyon during the clay-court swing. And at the French Open, he won his first Grand Slam in over a year with a victory over Albert Ramos Vinolas.

But defeats have become habitual in recent weeks, as the 34-year-old found little success in the warmup events on grass. Defeat to Lloyd Harris in Halle was quickly followed by another early exit in Eastbourne to the 283rd-ranked Max Purcell of Australia, despite being the top seed in England’s southeast coast.

O’Connell Comes Through Qualifying to Reach Main Draw

Christopher O’Connell will make his Wimbledon debut on Monday, joining a slew of talented Australians in the draw.

O’Connell who had played just two Grand Slam main draw matches before this season has found his name customary to Grand Slam main draws this year. He produced a stunning upset at his home Slam in beating the World No. 45 Jan-Lennard Struff.

However, there was despair at the French Open where he suffered a five-set loss to Tommy Paul despite rallying from two sets down.

Wimbledon will most certainly be the scene for him to banish the disappointment at Roland Garros. O’Connell came through two grueling three-setter in Roehampton, before beating Tomas Machac in straight sets in the final round of qualifying.

Monfils v O’Connell Prediction and Tip

Odds are pretty much even, which clearly explains these are tumultuous times for Gael Monfils on the court. Wins have dried up and his confidence has taken a massive hit. O’Connell, for his part, will be buoyed to spring an upset, which in fairness is not out of question.
