Garin Winless in Three Visits to Wimbledon

Cristian Garin is a premier performer on clay, winning five career titles on the surface and boasting over 200 match wins on the surface since turning pro a decade ago.

But for Garin – like the majority of clay-court specialists – translating that success outside of that surface has proved a major hurdle.

The Chilean’s record on grass is 8-5 (including qualifying matches). In three previous visits to Wimbledon, Garin has never won a match in the main draw. But could 2021 be the year he finally manages to turn the tables around?

For starters, Garin has played decent tennis on the clay yet again. He won an ATP 250 on home soil in Santiago during the Golden Swing and reached the second week of a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland Garros. His return game certainly packs a punch, but on quicker surfaces, he is not accustomed to dealing with his opponent’s power.

Zapata Miralles Holds Off Matusevich to Qualify

Bernabe Zapata Miralles has forged a career of doing things the hard way. And it was symbolic how he managed to squeeze his way into the main draw with a pulsating five-set win over Anton Matusevich.

Following wins over Challenger rivals Alessandro Giannessi and Bernard Tomic – both in straight sets – Zapata Miralles overcame wobble after squandering a match point in the fourth set against the Briton Matusevich. However, he managed to regroup in the fifth set and closed out a 6-2 3-6 7-6 6-7 6-3 victory to advance into the main draw for the first time.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a steady rise over the last 12 months, highlighted by winning two Challenger titles, and breaking the world’s top 200 last August.

In 2021, the 24-year-old reached the third round in Barcelona as a qualifier and won the Heilbronn Challenger last month. Those results have steered him into the world’s top 150, and should soon enough break the top 100 in the next few months.

Garin v Zapata Miralles Prediction and Tip

Both players are natural clay courters, but Garin starts as the favorite owing to his tour-level experience and his slightly better record on the grass. This should be a key metric to decide this match.
