Kvitova, Fresh Off a Semifinal Run on Grass

Petra Kvitova’s preparations for the Wimbledon have gone as per the plan, seeing her superb performance in the Bad Homburg Open last week. Playing as the top seed in the WTA 250 event, she made it all the way to the semifinal where she was beaten by the eventual champion Angelique Kerber.

Nonetheless, it was a positive result from the Czech, especially considering she withdrew from the French Open with an injury and took some time to recover.

Having won her 28th singles title this season (Qatar Open in February), Kvitova has now set her sights on winning her third Wimbledon Championship. However, it will be a tricky endeavour for her since, on the whole, she hasn’t been that consistent on the tour.

In the Australian Open, Italian Open, WTA Charleston, and Dubai Championships, Kvitova incurred shock defeats in the early rounds, thus setting precedents for future upsets too.

But for this first-round bout against Stephens, she will be hopeful of her chances to reach the second round. After all, her pedigree on grass is much superior to that of Stephens’.

Stephens Hoping to Bring Some of that Clay Spark

Former World No. 3 Sloane Stephens has been struggling a great deal with her form over the last couple of seasons. So much so that her ranking has taken a sharp dip as she now finds herself in the early 70s.

The 27-year-old American has worked hard to reclaim her former glory and the closest she came to was in this season’s clay swing. After a litany of opening-round defeats in the first half of the season, Stephens found her groove in Charleston where she reached the quarterfinal.

Then in May, she reached the semis in WTA Parma and in the French Open, she reached the fourth round, beating Karolina Pliskova and Karolina Muchova.

But now the tide has switched to grass and Stephens finds herself in a precarious position. At Wimbledon, her best result is a quarterfinal stint in 2013 while most recently in 2019, she made it as far as the third round.
