Danielle Collins v Polona Hercog Head to Head

In their only previous match that came at the 2019 US Open, Collins defeated Hercog to proceed to the second round of that edition.

Collins Out of Action Since Roland-Garros

Collins has opted not to feature in a truckload of tournaments this season, making it through to just six of them so far. And for a player ranked 48th in the world, Collins seems to have done well with a win-loss record of 12-6 so far.

Unfortunately that also means Collins comes into Wimbledon with no grass practice under her belt. Her last appearance came at French Open where the American made the third round before going down to Serena Williams in straight sets.

A semifinal at Phillip Island Trophy and another quarterfinal appearance at Yarra Valley Classic had both meant she had won three successive matches in each of them.

And while she hasn’t played on grass this season, her overall record on it seems to suggest she shouldn’t have too many problems adjusting to it. In 2019, she had defeated Zarina Diyas and Anastasija Sevastova at Wimbledon to make it through to the third round while having also won a couple of rounds at Eastbourne the year prior.

Hercog’s Won Just Three Matches This Year

It’s been a forgettable season for the 30-year-old Hercog, who has won just three matches in 2021 and none on grass.

Two of her wins came at French Open where she surprised Kiki Bertens and Caroline Garcia before falling short against Marketa Vondrosouva. Over the rest of the season, Hercog’s only other victory had come early in the year in Melbourne but her struggles even pushed her into playing on the ITF circuit.

More recently, Hercog also featured in a couple of grass tournaments but lost to Daria Kasatkina in the first round in Birmingham and failed to qualify for Eastbourne International.

This isn’t to say Hercog doesn’t enjoy playing on grass – only last Wimbledon, Hercog had made the third round with wins over Viktoria Kuzmova and Madison Keys. If she can conjure up that kind of showing, against a player who hasn’t played on grass all season, we could see a thriller here.

Collins v Hercog Prediction and Tip

Collins starts off a favourite but we expect this match to go the distance. A three-setter looks most likely with Collins winning it in the end.
