Aryna Sabalenka v Katie Boulter Head to Head

Sabalenka has a winning record over Katie Boulter, after emerging victorious in their only meeting before this at the 2019 Australian Open (also in the second round).

Sabalenka Routs Niculescu in Opener

In the absences of Naomi Osaka and defending champion Simona Halep, Aryna Sabalenka was installed as the tournament’s second seed and she certainly lived up to the billing in her first-round match.

With rain heavily disrupting play for a few hours on the outside courts on the opening day, Aryna Sabalenka and Monica Niculescu were the first players to take to Court No. 1. Under humid conditions, many tipped Sabalenka to struggle to cope against the unorthodox Romanian.

Niculescu had earned her spot in the main draw through qualifying, where she recorded three straight-sets wins. But her weaker shots were redirected with depth and devastating power by the Belarusian.

Sabalenka took the first set 6-1 in precisely half an hour, feeding off a vulnerable first serve by Niculescu which averaged at 82 mph.

Although the Romanian briefly thwarted the No. 2 seed with a late fightback in the second set, Sabalenka had the match firmly in her grasp. Overall, the woman from Minsk fired a remarkable 48 winners, six aces and her fastest serve hit 119 mph.

Boulter Leads Brits’ Charge

Katie Boulter became the first British player to book her spot in the second round of the 2021 Wimbledon Championships.

Boulter bears similarities to Aryna Sabalenka’s game in that they both have a penchant for power and aggression, and she needed to recover from a deficit to win in three sets.

The Leicester native who is ranked at a lowly 219 in the world rankings is certainly a better player than what her rankings suggest, but injuries have derailed her progress on the main tour.

And following a wild card entry in her home Slam, Boulter had a generous draw to start with, against the American qualifier Danielle Lao who was making her debut at Wimbledon at the age of 30.

Lao briefly appeared set to produce an upset on Court 17 when she took the first set in a tiebreaker. But Boulter managed to regroup to take the next two sets despite a strapped elbow. The Brit won 78% of first serves (over 20% more than what her opponent managed) and fired 37 winners.

Sabalenka v Boulter Prediction and Tip

Boulter is a quality player, but her health continues to dictate most of her matches. She has had three retirements this year with the most recent one coming in Nottingham just a few weeks ago. A fully-fit Boulter is certainly a match for Sabalenka, perhaps not in equal measure in terms of power but aggression.
