Elise Mertens v Lin Zhu Head to Head

Mertens leads Zhu 2-1 with their last meeting taking place in the Australian Open earlier this year. The Belgian won that match in straight sets.

Mertens Darts into Second Round

Elise Mertens kickstarted her Wimbledon campaign with a 6-1, 6-3 win over local favourite Harriet Dart. The 13th seeded player needed just an hour and 19 minutes to edge past Dart with 6-1, 6-3.

With this win, she has finally managed to pick a win on grass courts – something that she couldn’t quite manage in the preceding tournaments in Eastbourne and Birmingham. In both those events, Mertens was beaten in the first round in three sets respectively by Cori Gauff and Ajla Tomljanovic.

Currently ranked World No. 16, Mertens has had a fairly decent season so far. She won the Gippsland Trophy in February and later reached the final in the Istanbul Cup. Additionally, Mertens won the Australian Open doubles with Aryna Sabalenka, thus retaining her place in the top 10 on the doubles circuit.

As for her form on grass, it was 7-4 in 2019 with her best run coming here at Wimbledon when reached the fourth round.

First WTA Win for Zhu since March

#99 ranked Lin Zhu beat the German Mona Barthel in a three-set affair in her opening round match in London on Tuesday. After losing the first set in a tiebreak, she had to stage a comeback and take the match with 6-7(7), 6-3, 6-3. The whole match lasted for two hours and in all fairness, it was Barthel’s unforced errors (twice as many as Zhu’s) that helped the Chinese win.

Nonetheless, a win is a win and she now finds herself in the second round – her first such feat since the Monterrey Open back in March.

In all the other WTA tournaments she featured in between then and now, Zhu has lost in the qualifiers/first round. The 27-year-old also played in a couple of ITF events but the best she could do was reach the second round.

It is also the first time that Zhu has made it to this stage in Wimbledon. However, she will not get to enjoy a day’s rest owing to the washed-up schedule and will have to face Mertens in just over 24 hours.

Mertens v Zhu Prediction and Tip

Lin Zhu does not pose a significant threat at the moment and Mertens should be able to win this match comfortably.
