Shapovalov Pushed All the Way by German Veteran

In reaching the second round, the 22-year old Canadian has now matched his previous best showing at Wimbledon.

But he was made to work very hard for his first-round victory by the German veteran, Philipp Kohlschreiber, the world number 115.

It was a match largely dominated by service, with fine margins either way making all the difference.

That was the case io the first set when Shapovalov secured the only break to go ahead, and again in the second, when it was Kohlschreiber’s turn to seize the only break.

The pattern continued in the third set, with Shapovalov going ahead once more, but the games were becoming longer and scrappier, and chances started to appear for both men.

That was certainly the case in the fourth set where the two men swapped breaks, before Kohlschreiber broke the man 15 years his junior to level the match.

However, the fifth set became a service battle again, and there was only one break created in its entire duration. It was Shapovalov who converted it and he went on to seal the win with his second match point.

The pattern for the match was set in the first set, which, after one break apiece, went to a tie-break, which was tightly contested until the Spaniard converted his third set point.

The second set was dominated by serve until Andujar offered Herbert a break opportunity,  which he converted, The Frenchman saved two break points of hs own, ,and the match was level.

The third set started with both men dropping their serve twice, A further break a piece meant another tie-break, and, although Herbert was the first to earn a set point, it was the Spaniard who eventually claimed it.

When Herbert dropped his serve at the start of the fourth set the writing looked on the wall for him. He levelled, but then dropped his serve again, and Andujar had to match points. The Frenchman though not only saved them both, but broke Andujar twice to force a fifth set.

Again, Herbert was the first to drop his serve, but he would not submit and was soon back on even terms once more.

However, in the 13th game, Herbert was broken again and this time, Andujar was able to finally serve out.
