Fabio Fognini v Laslo Djere Head to Head

Their only previous meeting came earlier this year in Geneva on clay where Djere needed three sets to get past Fognini and make it to the quarterfinals.

Fognini Tames Ramos-Vinolas in Opener

In a match between two clay court specialists, Fognini did not waste a lot of time in getting past his opponent, Spain’s Albert Ramos-Vinolas in his opener.

Fognini won 7-6 (4), 6-2, 6-4 in just over two hours to seal his second round berth, in a match where he broke Ramos-Vinolas four times. In comparison Fognini lost his serve just once, but by then he was already two sets and a break up and the Italian broke right back to re-take the command of the match.

A whopping 41 winners for Fognini were somewhat tempered by his 38 unforced errors, but his opponent was at 19-26 on that count which made his own life easier.

The former world number nine, who has never made it past third round at Wimbledon, now has a chance to get to that stage for the fourth time in a row. His opponent in this next one has had his issues on grass and that should give Fognini the confidence he can emulate his best.

Djere Surprises Cuevas in Opener

Serbia’s Djere had just one career grass court victory under his belt coming into this Wimbledon and he has managed to double his tally by making it past veteran player Pablo Cuevas in his opener.

Going into his opener at 7/5 odds to get past his Uruguayan opponent, Djere overcame the loss of the first set to carve out a four-set win. He came through 5-7, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in two hours and 20 minutes to make it to the second round at Wimbledon for the first the first time in his career.

Interestingly both players hit the same number of unforced errors, 37 apiece, but it was Djere’s 35 winners that stole the show as compared to his opponent’s 22.

And Djere’s only loss of serve came in the first set which allowed Cuevas the luxury of the set lead, but he retaliated with a break of serve in each of the next three to clinch the match.

The big question now is if he trump Fognini in the next match and stall his passage to his Wimbledon-best third round.

Fognini v Djere Prediction and Tip

While Fognini starts off a favourite, the younger legs of Djere might have something to say about those 2/1 odds for his win. Expecting him to win at least one set.
