Lorenzo Sonego v Daniel Elahi Galan Head to Head

Sonego has a winning record against his second-round opponent. He beat the Colombian at the Milan Challenger in 2016, and most recently in the third round of the Miami Masters in 2021 – both in straight sets.

Sonego Wins His First Match at Wimbledon

Third time is indeed a charm for Lorenzo Sonego. The in-form Italian was bound to break his duck at the Wimbeldon Championships after posting his maiden main draw at the third attempt.

Sonego beat Portugal’s Pedro Sousa 6-2 7-5 6-0 to join fellow countrymen Matteo Berrettini and Gianluca Mager in the next round.

The World No. 26 dug himself out of a 0-30 hole in the fifth game of the first set, by winning four successive points to hold. The pressure got to Sousa who produced an inopportune double fault to cede a service break in the next game.

Shortly after Sousa appeared to struggle with an abdominal problem that required a trainer to attend to him. The Portuguese No. 2 would engage in shorter baseline exchanges agains the agile Italian.

Sousa stunned Sonego when he converted his only break point in the match at the start of the second set, but could not capitalize at the opportunity to level at 5-4. Once Sonego restored parity he was favorite to win the match from thereon.

And so it proved, when he secured a break in the 12th game of the second set, and the pain became unbearable for Sousa who lost the third set 6-0.

Galan Beats Continental Rival Coria

Daniel Elahi Galan also celebrated winning his maiden match at Wimbledon, with an absorbing four-set win over Argentina’s Federico Coria.

Galan’s 6-4 4-6 7-5 7-5 victory which was just eight minutes shy of three hours was indeed special, considering he had never qualified for the main draw at the grass-court Major.

In a battle between two players who had only ever played no more than three matches each on the surface, this was expected to be a tussle.

Galan had walked into the contest as the clear favorite given his recent commitment on the grass at the preliminary warm-up events. Unlike Coria, who had just finished runner-up at the Milan Challenger on clay three days earlier.

The Colombian World No. 112 won 73% first-serve points, converted six out of 14 breakpoints, and won 67% of net points (65/97).

Sonego v Galan Prediction and Tip

Sonego is widely expected to make his way into the third round as seamless as possible. Galan’s record on grass is very much nonexistent, and it would be a major shock if he managed to get anything in this match.
