Cilic Continues Hot Form on Grass

Having won his first ATP title in three years earlier in June this year, Cilic had come into this competition with some rhythm as you would expect from someone who had a 7-1 win-loss record on grass in 2021.

And while he was stretched for a while by Salvatore Caruso in his opening round encounter, Cilic came through in straight sets to move into the second round.

Cilic won 7-6 (5), 7-6 (1), 6-1 in two hours and 43 minutes, hammering 18 aces and 43 winners in his victory. And it could have been a lot more straightforward had he served out the first set at 5-3 but Caruso broke back to force a tie-breaker.

The Croat clinched it 7-5 and went through something similar in the second set as well, with Cilic getting an early break and then failing to serve it out at 5-4. In the tie-breaker that followed, Cilic ran through his opponent to win it 7-1 before breaking Caruso two times in the third set to carve out the win.

Much like Caruso, his second round opponent is also ranked outside the top 90.

Bonzi Tames Trungelliti in Five

In a battle of two qualifiers, Bonzi and Marco Trungelliti made it to five sets before a fighting final set saw the Frenchman come through to make his maiden second round appearance at Wimbledon.

Bonzi, who was a favourite in each of three qualifying rounds and lived up to those expectations, won 6-1, 1-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in a match of fluctuating fortunes and lasting two hours and 35 minutes.

And in the end, the difference between the two players was that of one break – one that came in the final set. Such was the close nature of the contest, both players won 56 points on their first serve, and while Trungelliti had a positive difference of three in his winners and unforced errors, Bonzi was +2 on that count.

Cilic would prove to be a more difficult challenge Trungelliti for sure but with Bonzi having tasted blood with a five-set win, he wouldn’t be short on confidence.

Cilic v Bonzi Prediction and Tip

With Cilic exhibiting signs of form from yesteryear, he should not just come through but do that in straight sets. Expect some fight though, a tie-breaker or two here or there.
