Taylor Fritz v Steve Johnson Head to Head

The pair have played each other three times before, and Johnson leads their head to head series by two matches to one.

Fritz won their first encounter on an indoor hard court in Memphis in 2016, but two years later, it was Johnson who triumphed on clay in Houston.

Their last match was in the first round of Indian Wells in 2019, Johnson winning in straight sets.

However, they have never played each other on grass before.

Fritz Wins First Match of the Year on Grass

Fritz has now made the second round of Wimbledon for a third success time, despite choosing not to play any warm-up tournaments on grass.

He faced a potentially tricky opponent in the form of compatriot Brandon Nakashima, who is tipped to have a big future in the game, and generally acquitted himself well.

Nakashima saved two break points in the opening game of the match, but after that it settled down into a service battle until Fritz broke his opponent, and then served out for the set.

Nakashima was not fazed, however, and, although he missed three points to break back early in the second set,, it was only a temporary reprieve for Fritz. Nakashima broke him, and then consolidated that position to level the match.

It was Fritz, though, who made the first move in the third set with an early break. Nakashima struck back to even things up, but then dropped his serve again when he serving to stay in the set.,

The ;pair swapped breaks at the star of the fourth set, and, although Nakashima then saved two break points, in his next service game he was forced to defend a match point.

He successfully did that, but two games later, Fritz got another chance, and this time he took it.

Johnson Looking to Maintain HIs Good Wimbledon Record

Johnson reached the fourth round of Wimbledon in 2016, and also has two third round appearances to his name as well.

And he began his latest campaign with a  straight sets win over the Austrian Denis Novak, the world number 122.

The first set was close with neither man able to break, although Novak had to save various points against his own serve.

That meant a tie-break, which Johnson finally clinched with his third set point.

Novak began the second set badly, dropping his opening two service games to love, and from there, Johnson was able to control matters with Novak winning just one point against his serve.

Johnson broke Novak again at the start of the third set, but, to his credit, the Austrian fought  back with a break of his own.

Novak even had the opportunity to break again and take the match into a  fourth set, but he could not take it and he did not get another chance. Johnson broke him again, and then served out, sealing the win with his second match point.

Tritz v Johnson Prediction and Tip

Although Fritz is the higher ranked player, Johnson has the better head to head record, and has previous history in this tournament. That makes him the favourite to reach the third round yet again.
