2018 Wimbledon doubles champion Katerina Siniakova began her 2021 singles campaign in style, as she lost just one game in her first round match to defeat China’s Yafan Wang.

The World No. 64 Siniakova needed just 55 minutes for her 6-1, 6-0 win. The Czech player converted five of seven break points, struck 24 winners and made 17 unforced errors to move into the second round at Wimbledon for teh fourth time in her sixth appearance. Twice she has gone on to reach the third round, but hasn’t gone beyond that stage at Wimbledon.

Vandeweghe Powers Past Govortsova

Siniakova will meet the United States’ CoCo Vandeweghe in the second round after the American defeated Belarusian qualifier Olga Govortsova in the first round on Wednesday.

A two-time Wimbledon quarterfinalist and a former World No. 9, Vandeweghe needed 67 minutes to beat the World No. 136, 6-4, 6-2.

Neither of the two missed out on a break point, but Vandeweghe had four in the match and her opponent just one.

The 29-year-old American, ranked 169th in the world, struck 26 winners and had just 16 unforced errors as she marched to the second round.

Vandeweghe, who tested positive for coronavirus last year and also suffered a finger injury, had reached the semifinals of the Birmingham Classic two weeks ago. The American had come into the grass season without winning a main draw match this year, having lost in the first rounds in Acapulco, Guadalajara, Monterrey and the WTA 250 in Charleston.

She also faced a first round defeat in Nottingham, but found form in Birmingham where she won five on the trot, including the qualifiers.

The 2017 Australian and U.S. Open semifinalist, Vandeweghe was 0-2 last year and 1-3 in 2019. She has featured in six WTA finals, winning two of them and both came on the grass courts of ‘s-Hertogenbosch (in 2014 and 2016).
