Elena Rybakina v Shelby Rogers Head to Head

The head-to-head before this match is currently tied at 1-1. Rogers won their first meeting in the second round of the US Open last season in straight sets, but it was Rybakina who claimed a three-set win in Berlin just a few weeks ago.

Rybakina Hasn’t Dropped A Set Yet

Elena Rybakina’s smooth progress into the third round has gone unnoticed, and that is partly due to a number of top seeds falling early on.

Rybakina is yet to drop a set in two matches, as she backed up her impressive first-round win over Kristina Mladenovic with yet another clinical performance on Wednesday to beat American qualifier Claire Liu.

The towering Kazakh dropped just six points behind her humongous first serve in the entire match and won 100% of her breakpoints (3/3) to win 6-4 6-4 in 80 minutes.

Rybakina got off to a hot start as she broke in the first game of the match, and then had to grit out a tough hold of her own in the next game. That in truth set the tone for the rest of the opening stanza, which went the way of the Kazakh.

The World No. 120 responded in the second set, but despite taking a shock 3-1 lead, her inexperience came to the fore as Rybakina rallied to win five of the next six games.

The number 18 seed is looking to build on a semifinal run in Eastbourne last week, and considering this is her first-ever showing at Wimbledon, a place in the second-week beckons if she can beat another American in the form of Shelby Rogers.

Rogers Stuns 15th Seed Sakkari

The Greek duo of Maria Sakkari and Stefanos Tsitsipas were national treasures following their exploits at Roland Garros last month. But not anymore, at least for this fortnight at Wimbledon.

Sakkari, a semifinalist at the clay Slam,  joined her compatriot in falling before the third round after she was beaten by the rampaging, improving Shelby Rogers.

Rogers has been in fine form since the pandemic-induced break last August. And she arrived at Wimbledon sitting at a career-high ranking of World No. 43. This also marked the first time she had re-entered the world’s top 50 since 2017.

The 28-year-old had taken a topsyturvy first set 7-5, before the match was suspended due to darkness. On resumption on Thursday, the unseeded American picked up the bones from where she left them and continued to feed on Sakkari’s weak second serve (the Greek won a measly 38% of points).

One break in the second set was enough for Rogers to confirm her place in the third round.

Rybakina v Rogers Prediction and Tip

It was quite a surprise to see Rogers win comfortably in the end considering how she had a tough time subduing Sam Stosur in the opening round. We should expect very few rallies on Friday, as both Rybakina and Rogers are aggressive baseliners. But Kazakh’s humongous serve should tip the scales in her favor.
