Roberto Bautista Agut v Dominik Koepfer Head to Head

Bautista Agut has a winning record against Koepfer, after emerging victorious in their only meeting before Friday at the 2020 Hamburg Open. The Spaniard won a Round of 16 match in three sets.

Bautista Agut Stops Kecmanovic in Five Sets

In the absence of Rafael Nadal, Roberto Bautsita Agut is the top-seeded Spaniard in the men’s singles draw at this year’s Championships. Despite being the overwhelming favorite in both of his two matches this week, the 33-year-old has scrapped his way into the third round.

Bautista Agut, who reached the semifinals of Wimbledon in 2019, seeks to reach the second of the grass-court Slam for the fourth time in his last five visits when he takes on Germany’s Dominik Koepfer.

The number eight seed appeared on course to book his spot in the third round after taking a two-set lead over Serbia’s rising star Miomir Kecmanovic, committing just 10 unforced errors.

But complacency kicked in, and the Spaniard doubled his unforced error count in set three, hitting 12. He was barely winning any return points either as Kecmanovic forced a tiebreak, which he dominated from start to finish.

With the wind in his sails, the young Serbian recovered from a break deficit in the fourth set, by breaking Bautista Agut in two successive service games to take the lead. He served out to force a decider when an hour earlier, had looked home and dried.

But Bautista Agut is tennis’ ultimate Iron Man for a reason. The fifth set was a battle for the wits. There was one single breakpoint that was in his favor and he duly converted to take a 5-3 lead. He made no mistake in serving his way into the third round.

Koepfer Continues Fairytale Run

Dominik Koepfer is not known for his grass-court excellence, but he has exceeded his own expectations with two fine victories under the unlikeliest of circumstances.

The German left-hander was given one of the most brutal first-round draws that you could have at Wimbledon – a match against the devastating serve of Reilly Opelka. Except that, Koepfer had an excellent record at tour-level against the towering American.

He had won both meetings before this week in straight sets, but on grass, the pendulum was tipped to shift in Opelka’s favor.

Koepfer knocked out Opelka in a match with very few opportunities on serve. And in the second round, he held off an inspired challenge from South Korea’s Kwon Soon-woo in a thrilling five-set match. The match went right down to the wire, and just a handful of breakpoint chances decided the contest.

Bautista Agut v Koepfer Prediction and Tip

This should be a close match than what the odds suggest. Needless to say, Bautista Agut will need to put in an improved display after his midmatch collapse against Kecmanovic. Koepfer, for his part, has thrived playing the role of the underdog, and we should certainly not discount him here.
