Badosa in Unknown Wimbledon Territory

Badosa won her first senior WTA title in May at the Serbia Open, and went on to reach the quarter-fianl of the French Open. But that was on clay, her favourite surface, and she had very little form on grass coming into the tournament, with just one first round defeat at Wimbledon to her name before.

That lack of familiarity can perhaps explain her struggle to beat compatriot Aliona Bolsova Zadoinov in the first round, dropping the section set to the world number 154, before reasserting control in the third set to take the match.

She produced a much more assured performance against Yulia Putintseva, the world number 43, from Kazakhstan, in their second round match on Thursday though.

The Spanish achieved an early break of serve in the first half and held on that advantage after a sequence of four consecutive dropped service games at the end of the set.

The match became more one-sided I the second set, and two breaks of serve enabled Badosa to take that for the loss of just one game, and with her own serve not coming under threat at all.

Like Badosa, she was made to work hard for her first round victory, and was made to come from a set down to beat Amanda Anisimoova of the USA, the world number 81.

However, she then produced the biggest upset in the women’s draw so far by knocking out the number three seed, Elina Svitolina of the Ukraine on Thursday.

The match began with the pair exchanging service breaks, until; Linette broke her opponent again, She had three break points to go further ahead, but it did not matter as she still went on to take the firsts et.

The second set was dominated by serve until Svitolina forced a break point. She could not take it, though, and that miss proved top b costly, as she was broken herself next game.

Linette served out for the match to love.
