Bernarda Pera v Ysaline Bonaventure Head to Head

This will be their first tour-level meeting. They met twice at the ITF Circuit with the Belgian winning both of them. She beat Pera in three in Amstelveen in 2013 and was leading the American 4-1 in the first set in Florence 2014, when Pera retired.

Pera Makes Quick Work of Kawa

World No. 74 Bernarda Pera of the Unites States needed just 70 minutes to dispatch Poland’s Katarzyna Kawa in the first round of the Hamburg Open on Tuesday.

Pera converted five of seven break points and saved one of two to win the Round of 32 contest 6-1, 6-2.

The American left-hander won 78.6% first serve points and 62% return points in the match to advance to the next round.

The win improved Pera’s main draw record to 6-13 this year and ended a four-match first-round losing streak for the American. She had last won a first-round match at the Italian Open, since then, the 26-year-old lost to Garbine Muguruza in the second round of the Italian Open, and made four consecutive first-round exits at Parma, Roland Garros, Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Pera, a nine-time winner and 11-time runner-up on the ITF circuit, is at her best on clay, and she improved to 19-17 overall on the surface following Tuesday’s win. Her best runs on clay came in 2018 and 2019, when she went 6-4 and 9-4 respectively.

Pera is yet to win two main draw matches in a row this season. She has gone past the first round and fallen in the second on five occasions. She will be looking to change that on Thursday.

Bonaventure Rallies Past Sharma

Facing Pera in the second round on Thursday will be Belgium’s Ysaline Bonaventure, who rallied from a set down to beat Australia’s Astra Sharma in the first round on Tuesday.

Outplayed in the first set by the Aussie, the Belgian bounced back for a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win in an hour and 45 minutes.

Bonaventure couldn’t break Sharma in the first set, but was broken twice by the Aussie. However, the Belgian made a resounding comeback in the next two, breaking her opponent’s serve thrice in the second and twice in the third to win her first main draw match this year and improve to 4-10 from all matches in 2021.

The World No. 128 Bonaventure’s three wins this year came against Natalija Kostic and Antonia Lottner in the first two rounds of the Australian Open qualifiers and against Allie Kiick in the first qualifying round at Wimbledon.

An 11-time winner and 10-time runner-up on the ITF Circuit, the 26-year-old left-hander has a career-high ranking of 109 and has won two doubles titles on the tour. She won her only Grand Slam match at the U.S. Open last year, beating China’s Zhang Shuai.

Pera v Bonaventure Prediction and Tip

Bonaventura crossed the first hurdle but defeating Pera in the next round will be a huge task. The American looked in great touch, has won more matches this year and against quality opponents as well. Expect Pera to win in straight sets.
