Yastremska Makes a Winning Return

World No. 38 Dayana Yastremska made a winning return to the tour as she knocked out Poland’s Magdalena Frech in the second round of the Hamburg Open on Thursday.

Playing for the first time since losing in the first round of the Linz Open last year, Yastremska did show a bit of nerves in the first set as she needed eight set points to finally close it out in the tie-break. Once she wrapped up the set in an hour and 14 minutes, the 21-year-old Ukrainian didn’t waste much time in the second, racing past her opponent in 33 minutes for a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 victory.

Both players had six break points in the match, with Yastremska converting four and saving four.

The top seed, who received a first-round bye, had been suspended by ITF in January after she tested positive for a substance prohibited by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). Her provisional suspension, however, was lifted recently after an independent tribunal under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme said there was no fault or negligence on her part.

The aggressive right-hander is a three-time champion on the tour and was a finalist at Adelaide last year.

Errani Knocks Out Konjuh

Former World No. 5 Sara Errani of Italy moved into her third quarterfinal of the season as she defeated Croatia’s Anna Konjuh 7-6 (7-5), 6-3 in an hour and 32 minutes.

A nine-time winner on the tour, Errani won 57 percent service points and 51 percent return points in the match that saw her break her opponent five times while saving four of seven break points.

On Wednesday, the World No. 105 Errani had defeated fifth seed Fiona Ferro of France 7-5, 6-3 in the first round of the tournament.

The 2012 French Open finalist had reached the last eight in Bogota and Parma, losing to Tamara Zidansek and Sloane Stephens respectively.

The 34-year-old Italian, who failed to qualify for the French Open and Wimbledon, had a pretty good run at the Australian Open earlier this year. Coming through the qualifiers, Errani defeated China’s Qiang Wang in a tough three-setter, before handing Venus Williams a 6-1, 6-0 rout in the second round. She eventually went down fighting to Hsieh su-wei in the third round.

Yastremska v Errani Prediction and Tip

Despite being the top seed, Yastremska is short of match practice and the experienced Errani could use that to her advantage. Expect this match to go the distance with the Ukrainian edging out the Italian.
