Paolini Saves Two Match Points in the First Round

Seventh seed Jasmine Paolini survived a scare at the Lausanne Open on Wednesday. The Italian fended off two match points and made an incredible comeback to beat Greece’s Valentini Grammatikopoulou in the first round.

After taking the first set, Paolini lost the second and was down 2-5 in the third, before embarking on a five-game winning streak to defeat the World No. 273, 6-3, 4-6, 7-5. It was the second time this year that the Italian saved two match points before going on to close out a contest. Earlier, she had done that against China’s Wang Qiang in the second round of the Gippsland Trophy in Melbourne.

The 25-year-old Paolini, ranked 87th in the world, has been very successful at the WTA 125K tournaments this year. She won the title in Bol last month, defeating Arantxa Rus in the final, and finished runner-up in Saint-Malo, after losing to Viktorija Golubic in the title clash.

On the tour, Paolini improved her main draw record to 6-11 following Wednesday’s victory. She had won her maiden doubles crown on Sunday, winning the Hamburg title with partner Jil Teichmann.

Vikhlyantseva Fights Back to Down Zavatska

Facing Paolini will be Russia’s Natalia Vikhlyantseva, who bounced back after losing the first set to beat Ukraine’s Katarina Zavatska in the first round on Monday.

The 175th-ranked Vikhlyantseva, who reached a career-high ranking of 54 in 2017, needed two hours and 26 minutes for a 4-6, 6-4, 6-0 victory. Both players had too many break point opportunities in the match. The Russian broke her opponent 10 times from 23 breaking chances, and saved 12 of 19 break points that she faced.

In all, there were a total of 192 points played in the match with Vikhlyantseva winning 104 of them.

This was Vikhlyantseva’s first main draw victory of the year and only her third in all competitions. She had beaten Georgia’s Oksana Kalashnikova and the United States’ Alycia Parks in the qualifying rounds of the Charleston Open.

Vikhlyantseva had reached the final at ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2017, only to be denied a maiden title by Annett Kontaveit. The 24-year-old Russian has two titles and four runner-up finishes at the  ITF Circuit.

Paolini v Vikhlyantseva Prediction and Tip

Both players were tested in the first round and both dug deep to keep their challenge alive in the tournament. Expect them to put up a good show in the second round as well, but Paolini’s remarkable form and Vikhlyantseva overall woeful season, makes the Italian a favourite in this contest. Expect Paolini to move into the quarterfinals.
