Yulia Putintseva v Kateryna Kozlova Head to Head

They have met twice before with both winning one apiece. Both of those matches were in 2018, both were quarterfinals and both needed just two sets to decide the winner.

Kozlova won in Taipei City, while Putintseva won in Guangzhou.

World No. 42 Yulia Putintseva entered a third quarterfinal in 2021 with a 6-4, 6-3 win over Croatia’s Ana Konjuh on Wednesday.

The Kazakh player needed just an hour and 47 minutes to score the win, which saw her save two of six break points and convert six of nine. Putintseva won a total of 54% return points and was more impressive on winning second serve return points winning 27/36 or 75% of those points.

The 26-year-old Kazakh had on Monday begun her her Budapest campaign with a 6-2, 6-4 win over Georgia’s Ekaterine Gorgodze.

With Wednesday’s win, Putintseva improved to 16-15 from all matches, including qualifiers, this year. She had previously reached the quarterfinals in Charleston and Strasbourg, losing to Danka Kovinic and Magda Linette respectively.

Putintseva, who reached a career-high ranking of 27 in 2017, won a WTA title in Nuremberg in 2019 and finished runners-up in St. Petersburg and Guangzhou in 2017 and 2018 respectively, Putintseva is also a three-time major quarterfinalist, reaching that stage at the French Open in 2016 and 2018 and the U.S. Open last year.

Kozlova Takes Out the Fifth Seed

Facing Putintseva in the quarterfinal will be Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova, who rallied from a set down to beat fifth seed Romanian Ana Bogdan 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Kozlova saved two of six break points and converted six of 10 to wrap-up the contest two hours and 15 minutes.

The 27-year-old Ukrainian, ranked 154th in the world, had beaten Austria’s Barbara Haas 7-6 (11-9), 6-3 in a two-hour-and-four-minute first-round contest on Monday.

Kozlova’s best performance in 2021 so far had been a run to the Round of 16 at the Nottingham Open. She won two in a row after winning her qualifying round to reach the Round of 16, before bowing out with a defeat to Johanna Konta.

The Ukrainian had reached the final of the Taipei Open in 2018, falling to Timea Babos. She has one WTA 125K title, which she won in Dallas in 2017, to go with her five ITF titles.

Putintseva is yet to drop a set this week and will look continue dominating in the quarterfinals. Expect the Kazakh to reach her first semifinal of 2021.
