Wang Moves Past Liang

19-year-old Xinyu Wang will be pleased with her performance so far in Prague, having made it to the quarterfinal. It also marks the first time on the tour that she has made it this far in a WTA event.

To achieve this historic feat, the Chinese player dispatched En-Shuo Liang 3-6, 7-5, 6-1, in a little over two hours on Thursday.

Earlier in the season, Wang had made it to the second round in the St. Petersburg Trophy as a qualifier, picking up 80 ranking points in the process. That, along with reaching the main draw in Wimbledon from the qualifying rounds and winning an ITF title mark the key highlights of her year so far.

A two-time Grand Slam Junior doubles winner, Wang has picked four titles and three runner-up trophies on the ITF circuit since turning pro in 2018. She has an enviable pedigree on her side already and will certainly fancy her chances against Min.

Min Upsets Stojanovic

After shocking the Australian doubles veteran Samantha Stosur in the first round, Grace Min carried her fine form forward by beating the number seven seed Nina Stojanovic 3-6, 6-1, 6-4.

Currently ranked #181 on the singles circuit – a good 30 places behind Wang – the American has also delivered the best run of her season by reaching the quarterfinal in Prague. In fact, it is also the first time this season that Min has won the first-round match in a WTA main draw.

Between the French Open, Wimbledon, and Nordea Open last week, Min could not get any wins under her belt, barring a qualifying round victory in Paris. That said, the 27-year-old has experience on her side and can very well reach the semis.

Wang v Min Prediction and Tip

Both players are coming on the backs of similar performances but Wang has had a slightly superior season than Min’s and that gives her the slight edge to start as the favourite in this game.
