Jordan Thompson v Ivo Karlovic Head to Head

Thompson leads 2-1 on the tour, but Karlovic has won once at the Challenger level.

Thompson Coming off a Decent Grass Court Season

After a disappointing run on clay, World No. 71 Jordan Thompson produced some decent results on grass, where he usually tends to do well, but doesn’t get too many opportunities because of the paucity of tournaments on the surface. Now he returns to the hard courts where he has played most of his matches through his career and has also won nine of his 12 Challenger and Futures title.

The Australian had a 4-4 record from his early season matches on hard courts, thanks to a quarterfinal finish at Melbourne-1 and a second round appearance in Miami.

Thompson’s best performances this year came on grass, which included a run to the third round at Wimbledon, where he had never won a match in his four previous appearances.

He was also a semifinalist in Newport this week and a quarterfinalist in Mallorca. The 9-5 grass season gave his overall win-loss record some respectability as it now stands at 15-14.

It will be interesting to see if the 2019 ‘s-Hertogenbosch runner-up can replicate his grass form on the hard courts of Los Cabos.

Karlovic was a Champion in 2016

He is 42, and still continues to remain a threat for his opponents. Not at his prime any more, but the man with over 13,600 aces in his career can still trouble players with his serves, and 45 aces from his two matches in Newport this week are a testament to it.

Karlovic hasn’t played much this year on the tour, appearing only at Delray Beach apart from Newport, but will look to improve on the 2-2 record with a deeper run in Los Cabos, where he was a champion in 2016.

The ageless Croatian, who has won eight career titles from 19 finals, hasn’t won a title since beating Feliciano Lopez in the 2016 Los Cabos final.

Currently ranked 210th in the world, the vastly experienced Karlovic has a winning 234-215 record on hard courts and still looks to keen to put up a fight on court rather than giving up easily.

Thompson v Karlovic Prediction and Tip

Karlovic’s serves will bother Thompson during the course of the match, but the Australian should eventually come out on top.
