It was way back in November that Minella had last won a main draw match on the WTA circuit, going through a losing streak that lasted till earlier this month.
It was at Lausanne that Minella finally broke that with a straight-set win over Varvara Gracheva before she fell in straight sets to Tamara Zidansek in the second.
The good news for Minella is her preference for clay which can be seen from the fact she has a win percentage of 47% on this surface, as compared to 35% on hard court surfaces. Not to mention a rather underwhelming one win from nine grass encounters.
On the other side of the spectrum is her issues in recent times, form which has seen her plummet down the rankings charts; having ended 2019 at 141st in the world, she is currently 220th thanks to her poor form.

Qualifier Ruse on a Brilliant Run
That she needed to qualify for this event in Palermo is down to her low ranking but Ruse showed why it shouldn’t have been necessary. She won those qualifiers for the loss of a mere five games, making it to the main draw rather easily.
And that confidence can find its roots in the manner in which Ruse won her maiden WTA title a week ago.
As a qualifier in Hamburg as well, Ruse got the better of Jil Teichmann, Danielle Collins and Dayana Yastremska to make it to the final where she sent Andrea Petkovic packing to lift the trophy.
And counting those qualifiers there and the two here, she has now won nine in a row, dropping just two sets in the process.
Against a player who has struggled all season, Ruse should have no difficulties in continuing her form and getting through to the second round.

Unless Ruse loses her rhythm dramatically, it seems very likely she will make it through to round two and in straight sets.
