Kiki Bertens v Marketa Vondrousova Head to Head

Vondrousova won their only matchup at the U.S. Open in 2018. It was an epic three-setter which the Czech won 7-6, 2-6, 7-6.

Bertens In Her Last Tournament

She is just 29, but the Dutchwoman has decided to call time on her career after the Olympics.

Having undergone an Achilles surgery last year, Bertens has found it tough to return to the levels that saw her claim 10 titles over her career, thus deciding to bid the game farewell, with one last shot at glory for her country at the Olympics.

Not seen as a top contender in Tokyo, the 16th seed will aim to give it her all in a bid to sign off in style.

She doesn’t bring a good form to Tokyo though, having won just twice from her nine matches this year, and is on a four match losing streak. But with the crowds getting behind the former World No. 4 in her last tournament, she may well extend her final act by a few more days.

Vondrousova Will Look to Get Into a Good Rhythm Early

Given Bertens’ recent struggles with form and injury, Marketa Vondrousova will fancy her chances against the World No. 21.

The 2019 French Open finalist has been in decent touch this year and brings a 14-12 record to Tokyo. She was particularly good on the hard courts of Melbourne, reaching the semifinals of the Yarra Valley Classic and the fourth round of the Australian Open, and will hope to have the same impact in Tokyo.

A medal prospect? If she gets through the first two rounds she could be up against Naomi Osaka in the Round of 16, and that’s where it could all end for the 22-year-old Czech. But the women’s game is no stranger to surprises and at least the Czech would want to believe that she has a real chance of pulling off a few upsets on her way to a podium finish.

But first the focus will be on Bertens and Vondrousova will be eager to get into a good rhythm early in the tournament.

Bertens v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

Prior to the surgery, the odds may have favoured Bertens, but given how things have been this year, Vondrousova will be the favourite to advance to the next round.
