Elina Svitolina v Laura Siegemund Head to Head

Sixth-ranked Svitolina and 61st-ranked Siegemund have not played each other before this.

Newlywed Svitolina Targets Olympic Gold

Elina Svitolina and Gael Monfils became tennis’ latest super couple as the pair tied the knot in Geneva last week. But the honeymoon period has been put on hold, with both Svitolina and Monfils representing their countries at the upcoming Summer Olympic games.

Svitolina has looked far from her vintage best in recent weeks, but you could make a case of the emotional toll and preparations of her wedding being a major cause. She won two matches on grass at three tournaments, including a second-round exit at Wimbledon at the hands of Magda Linette.

So far in 2021, the 26-year-old Ukrainian has compiled a 21-13 record. With a pair of semifinals and four quarterfinals, she is yet to add another trophy to her 15 career titles this season.

Svitolina will make her second straight appearance at the Olympics. At the 2016 games in Rio, Svitolina looked well on course to reach the gold medal match after upsetting Serena Williams early in the tournament. But she lost in the quarterfinals to Petra Kvitova quite handily.

Siegemund Gets Rare Opportunity to Shine

Making her second straight appearance at the Olympics will also be Laura Siegemund. The 33-year-old German from Filderstadt produced a starring run in Rio five years ago.

Siegemund took advantage of a very generous draw to reach the quarterfinals before losing to the eventual gold medalist Monica Puig. But without discrediting Siegemund’s accomplishment, the unorthodox German was playing some of the best tennis of her career at the time.

2016 tuned out to be Siegemund’s best season by some distance. She won her maiden WTA title in Bastad along with the aforementioned accomplishment at the Olympics. Although she managed to replicate some of that success in 2017, she has yet to hit those dizzying heights again due to the misfortune of debilitating injuries.

Her record this year is a modest 14-13, including qualifying matches. She reached the quarterfinals on home soil in Bad Homburg, losing to Katerina Siniakova – her best result of 2021.

Svitolina v Siegemund Prediction and Tip

Svitolina starts as the overwhelming favorite to advance, but the Olympic games have served us reminders it does not always follow the script. There is also a cloud of uncertainty regarding Svitolina’s form, but assuming she has overcome her mental and emotional exertions, she should be able to account for the German.
