Aslan Karatsev v Jeremy Chardy Head to Head

Chardy beat Karatsev in the first round at Wimbledon this year. He also won a qualifying round in Shanghai two years ago.

Karatsev Tames Paul

Aslan Karatsev celebrated his return to hard courts with a near-flawless performance against USA’s Tommy Paul, defeating the World No. 54 in straight sets and moving into the second round of the Olympics.

Representing the Russian Olympics Committee, the 27-year-old didn’t face a break point in the match, as he wrapped-up the one-hour-and-15-minute first-round contest 6-3, 6-2.

The Russian struck 19 winners and made 22 unforced errors on his return to the surface where he shot to fame at the Australian Open earlier this year and also clinched his maiden title in Dubai.

A relatively unknown before the start of the season, Karatsev is  13-3 from his four hard-court tournaments this year. He also had a good run on clay finishing with a 9-6 record, which included a final in Belgrade. He couldn’t add to his Dubai title though going down to Matteo Berrettini in the final.

He lost a bit of form on grass, but will be relieved to have found his touch back on what has been the most productive surface for him so far.

Currently sitting on a career-high ranking of 24, Karatsev began the season outside of top 100 but his run from the qualifiers to semifinals in the first major of the year and his subsequent title success in Dubai followed by consistent displays on clay has seen him constantly move up  the rankings.

Chardy Eases Past Barrios

Another player who looked happy to be back on hard courts is Jeremy Chardy. The Frenchman had completely lost his early season form on clay and grass surfaces but looked comfortable in his opening round win over Tomas Barrios of Chile in Tokyo.

Not broken in the contest, the 34-year-old had two breaks of serves in a relatively easy first set, but was give a bit of tough fight in the second with neither being able to break and the set going into a tiebreak. Chardy stuttered in the beginning of the tiebreak, but took control in the later stages to win the one-hour-and-30 minute contest 6-1, 7-6 (7-4).

Chardy had come to the Olympics with a 16-16 record this year. He was 11-7 on hard courts, reaching the semifinals in Antalya and Melbourne-2 and quarterfinals in Rotterdam and Dubai, but lost his form later, going 4-6 on clay and 1-3 on grass.

Karatsev v Chardy Prediction and Tip

Both have begun well, but Karatsev’s performance was a tad better given the level of competition he faced in the first round. While Karatsev will be favourite to advance, the fact that Chardy knocked him out in the first round at Wimbledon will play in his mind.

Still expecting Karatsev to win this in straight sets.
