Maria Sakkari v Nina Stojanovic Head to Head

Sakkari and Stojanovic have played once before at ITF level. That happened in 2015 in a first-round match at the Minsk ITF. The Greek won comprehensively in straight sets.

Sakkari Overcomes Kontaveit in Opener

Sakkari needed to show resolve and resilience to defeat Anett Kontaveit in straight sets. Sakkari won 7-5 6-2 in about 92 minutes, but things were trickier in the early part of that tussle.

The match was a slow burner that came to life in the sixth game. Kontaveit made her first move by breaking the Sakkari serve at her second attempt before she consolidated for a 5-2 lead.

Sakkari who is one of the fittest athletes on the women’s tour did not throw in the towel. She repeatedly landed the telling shots and won five straight games (nullifying a set point in the process) to take the opening set under the unlikeliest of circumstances.

In the second set, the Estonian’s game disintegrated completely. Kontaveit won just eight return points and was broken twice towards the end to succumb to defeat. Sakkari smashed seven aces in total and had a better rate of points won behind both first and second serves to keep her dream of winning gold alive.

Stojanovic Takes Care of Hibino

In a repeat of their 2021 French Open meeting – also in the first round – Nina Stojanovic managed to turn the tables on Nao Hibino and avenged her loss to the Japanese in convincing fashion.

In fact, Stojanovic had lost the first meeting to Hibino at ITF level, and this looked like a very challenging matchup for her. But 2021 has so far turned into her breakout season on the WTA tour. Having played at all three Grand Slams this year, Stojanovic has notched up some impressive wins under her belt against players who have been ranked higher than her.

And against the World No. 77 in Hibino, Stojanovic proved that ranking was indeed a number. With advice from countryman Novak Djokovic, Stojanovic overcame a nervous start in which she trailed 1-3. But remarkably she did not concede another service game.

Stojanovic won 11 of the 14 games after that 1-3 deficit in the first set, to win the match 6-3 6-3 in 87 minutes. The World No. 90 will also team up with compatriot Djokovic in Mixed Doubles.

Sakkari v Stojanovic Prediction and Tip

It seems Stojanovic is reaping the fruits of lengthy off-season training. She is on the cusp of recording double-digit match wins on hard courts. But Sakkari is a superior player in every department and should roll into the third round.

Tip: Sakkari to win in straight sets: 4/9 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
