Belinda Bencic v Misaki Doi Head to Head

Bencic holds a 3-0 lead over Doi, last defeating her as recently as the 2021 WTA Adelaide 500 with 6-1, 6-3.

Bencic Starts Strong

Belinda Bencic faced little to no difficulties in her opening-round match against Jessica Pegula of the USA. The Swiss won that match 6-3, 6-3 to set up the clash with the Japanese.

As one of the only two Swiss players participating in tennis events at the Olympics (the other being Viktorija Golubic), expectations will be high for her to go the distance. And in all fairness, the 24-year-old may very well secure a medal spot if not the gold.

Bencic reached two singles finals on the tour in 2021 – one in Adelaide and the other in Berlin with both being WTA 500 tier events. Even though she lost both those finals respectively to Iga Swiatek and Liudmila Samsonova, it was Bencic’s first such run on the tour since the 2019 Kremlin Cup.

Following that run in Berlin, however, the World No. 12 was beaten in the opening rounds in Eastbourne and Wimbledon after which, she travelled to Tokyo for the Games.

Over the course of her career, Bencic has delivered some impressive results against many top 10 players, in addition to reaching 12 singles finals on the WTA Tour.

Doi in for a Massive Battle

Misaki Doi, currently ranked World No. 94, defeated Renata Zarazúa of Mexico with 6-3, 6-2 in the first round of the Tokyo Olympics. While the Japanese did not face any major difficulties there, she is going to find herself in a world of trouble when she faces Bencic.

Doi’s entire season can be summarised with a win-loss tally of 14-20 with a good chunk of those 14 victories coming in the qualifying/opening rounds of her participating tournaments.

The highlight of her season was the Qatar Open where she reached the second round as a lucky loser, losing to Elina Svitolina. In more recent times, the best Doi has delivered is a second-round run in the Bad Homburg Open and a first-round exit in Wimbledon.

Bencic v Doi Prediction and Tip

It shouldn’t be that difficult for Bencic to beat a player like Doi, especially when we look at the stark differences between the form, pedigree, and skill of the two players.

Expect the Swiss to win this one in straight sets.
