Ivashka Spoils Monfils’ Honeymoon

Ivashka caused an upset on Sunday by beating the number 110 seed, Gael Monfils, a man technically on his honeymoon after marrying long-time partner Elina Svitolina last week.

Although he had to save three break points in his opening service game, it was Ivashka who was the first to break, and then he consolidated that with another break two games later. Monfils immediately recovered one of them, but could not manage the second, and Ivashka claimed the first set.

The second set was dominated by serve, and few break opportunities were on offer to either man. However, when one presented itself in the ninth game, the Frenchman took it and the scores were level.

The pair swapped breaks at the start of the second set, and both had further break opportunities which they could not take.

However, then Monfils was broken again, giving Ivashka the chance to serve out for the match.

It proved to be an epic struggle with Ivashka creating four match points and Monfils three break points, all of which were saved by the other man. Finally, though, Ivashka was able to convert his fifth match point.

Kukushkin Beats South American Clay Court Player

Kukushkin had the good fortune to be drawn against Federico Coria of Argentina in the first round, a man, although ranked 71 places higher than him in the world, is much happier on clay than the hard courts of Tokyo.

Despite that it was Kukushkin who came under pressure first, and he had to save four break points, before he was able to break Coria in turn. The Argentine, though, hut back immediately with a break of his own, and it eventually went to a tie-break.

Coria drew first blood by going a mini-break-up, but then dropped two service points of his own and Kukushkin was able to serve out for the set.

The opening games of the second set went with serve, but then there was a run of five games, in which both men were broken once, either side of a Kukushkin hold.

And, for good measure, he completed the win with another break. Sealing victory with his second match point.
