Stefanos Tsitsipas v Frances Tiafoe Head to Head

Tsitsipas has a 3-1 head-to-head lead over Tiafoe; winning those matches at the Japan Open, Next Gen ATP Finals, and Hopman Cup. But their most recent meeting came just a few weeks ago at Wimbledon when the American scored a memorable straight-sets win in the first round.

Tsitsipas Masters Kohlschreiber

Stefanos Tsitsipas uninspiring form coming to Tokyo gave Philipp Kohlschreiber plenty of optimism. But the Greek snapped the slump in a hard-fought three-set win that took nearly two hours.

Tsitsipas needed to fight the demons that engulfed his most recent defeat in Hamburg to Krajinovic. He made a fantastic start to proceedings in which he tamed the German’s big serve and raced to take the first set in 36 minutes. He dropped just four points behind his first serve.

In the second set, the Greek played marginally better, committing just one unforced error in the set but played a horrible game towards the end to get broken.

And when Kohlschreiber nudged ahead 2-0 in the final set, Tsitsipas’ hopes appeared to be in real jeopardy. However, the veteran’s lead barely lasted more than 10 minutes. The French Open runner-up eventually closed out victory with another break of serve – his third of the afternoon to win the match 6-3 3-6 6-3.

Clinical Tiafoe Beats Kwon Soon-woo

Frances Tiafoe got his Olympics campaign underway in perfect style. He defeated the World No. 71 Kwon Soon-woo 6-3 6-2 in just 70 minutes.

Tiafoe who is coming off a third-round showing at Wimbledon fired 12 aces, and won an impressive 85% of first-serve points. He saved both breakpoints on his serve and went on to secure five of his own against the South Korean’s.

The American’s unforced error count of 12 should also put him in good stead. That translated to exactly one error per game, further underlining his superiority and dominance in a routine victory.

With this win, Tiafoe has now won eight matches on hard courts in 2021 ahead of his scheduled second-round meeting against Tsitsipas on Tuesday.

Tsitsipas v Tiafoe Prediction and Tip

Tsitsipas was off-color at Wimbledon and will look to put Tiafoe’s serve under the microscope this time – something he failed to do in three very one-sided sets at SW19.

While Tsitsipas looked shaky in his opening match in Tokyo, he should be relieved to return to winning ways. Tiafoe will certainly present another major hurdle and we are backing both players to win a set here.
