Osaka, Carrying the Hopes of a Nation

From speaking up on mental health issues to lighting the Olympic flame for the 2020 Summer Games in Tokyo, Naomi Osaka has done it all over the last several weeks as the World No. 2.

The 23-year-old, who won the Australian Open earlier in the season, has had a muted year so far with not that many appearances. Following the title run in the Melbourne Slam, she reached the quarterfinal in the Miami Open.

On clay, however, Osaka’s form took a sharp hit as she delivered a string of early-round exits in the Italian Open, Madrid Open, and the French Open. The Japanese then sat out the entirety of the grass swing in preparation for the Olympics, as well as to focus on herself.

Her journey in the Games so far has been quite impressive, beating the likes of Saisai Zheng and Viktorija Golubic in straight sets. As a four-time Grand Slam winner, she obviously has the goods to go the distance and bring home the gold.

Vondrousova Looking to Impress

Marketa Vondrousova survived a minor scare in her opening match of the Tokyo Olympics as she battled Kiki Bertens of the Netherlands for three sets. After winning that gruelling encounter, she next dispatched Mihaela Buzarnescu of Romania 6-1, 6-2 with absolute ease.

While the 22-year-old Czech hasn’t had a season as phenomenal as Osaka’s, she has certainly had her moments. Among the highlights of Vondrousova’s year are a fourth-round stint in the French Open, Australian Open, and Miami Open, in addition to a semifinal run in the Yarra Valley Classic.

In these tournaments, the #42 ranked tennis star also defeated a few players ranked well above her like Belinda Bencic and Elina Svitolina.

Over the course of her career, Vondrousova has also achieved some impressive feats like reaching the final of Roland Garros in 2019. Even though consistency is not her strong point, she has the skillset to take someone of Osaka’s calibre head-on and give them a run for their money.

Osaka v Vondrousova Prediction and Tip

This will be an intriguing affair. Osaka faces her toughest test yet in the Olympics but the elusive gold medal demands such games. That said, Vondrousova will fancy her chances, especially when many other top seeds have already fallen early on to the underdogs.
