Paula Badosa v Nadia Podoroska Head to Head

There have been no previous WTA matches played between these two. They did face off on the ITF circuit once before, way back in 2014 and Badosa had won that match.

Badosa Sends Shockwaves in Olympics

She was a whopping 5/2 to win her second round match against one of the pre-tournament favourites Iga Swiatek. But it took Badosa only two sets to get past the 2020 French Open winner and seal her round of 16 berth.

In a match lasting an hour and 50 minutes, Badosa won 6-3, 7-6 (4) to stun many an expert who had anticipated Swiatek to cruise through her second round match against an opponent who had done well on clay recently.

An 82% first serve percentage and winning 67% of those points meant Badosa had a huge help with her serving, something her opponent struggled with.

Having needed three sets to come through against Kristina Mladenovic earlier, the Belgrade Open winner Badosa came back from being 1-3 down in the opening set to break Swiatek three times in a row and claimed it.

Swiatek went a break up in the second set too, only to drop serve soon after before Badosa eased her through the tie-breaker.

Badosa should not have too many worries in her next round though.

Podoroska Causes a Second Flutter

At the ITF level, Podoroska looked to have done well in hard court tournaments till last year before shifting over to the WTA circuit and making it to the semifinal at Newport Beach Open

She then managed a quarterfinal appearance at the Yarra Valley Classic in Melbourne earlier this year but apart from that has had her own struggles on hard courts.

There have been three opening round losses at such tournaments and in the three others, she has managed to win just one match apiece. Which is why coming into both her matches in the Olympics so far, Podoroska was a rank outsider to win them.

She was 6/4 to win her opener against Yulia Putintseva and did so in straight sets but more vitally started out 7/3 in her second round match against Ekaterina Alexandrova which she then carved out a stunning 6-1, 6-3 win.

Can she now overturn the odds yet again?

Badosa v Podoroska Prediction and Tip

Badosa is an easy favourite here with odds of 1/3 for her victory. Podoroska’s form so far does mean, however, she could pull off something special but that might not be enough to register a win.
