Daniil Medvedev v Pablo Carreno Busta Head to Head

Medvedev Prevails Over Fognini & Heat

After a successful end to 2020 and a strong start to 2021 Down Under, Daniil Medvedev had a bout of Covid-19 that kept him out of the early portion of the clay court season. When he returned to the clay swing, it was a dismal run at both Madrid and Rome for the world number two as he headed to Roland Garros stating that clay was not a surface he enjoyed playing on.

It was a surprisingly good run for Medvedev at the French Open, where got his act together making the quarter-finals dropping only one set and looking in good touch and happy with his groundstrokes and game. A fair run on the grass followed as he won the ATP 250 at Eastbourne, and made the round of 16 at Wimbledon, before uncharacteristically letting go of a two sets to one lead against Pole Hubert Hurkacz.

Back on the hard courts here which is his favorite surface, the Russian was pushed in the opener by Kazakh Alexander Bublik but prevailed in two tight sets and put on a clinical display against India’s Sumit Nagal to prevail in straight sets comfortably in the next round.

The Russian was off to a strong start in his round of 16 match against Italian Fabio Fognini winning the first set 6-2. But, the heat and the conditions got the better of Medvedev who looked out of energy in the second as he lost the second set 3-6.

A ten minute player break followed and Medvedev managed to get another wind as he came out saving three break points early in the third, to then break Fognini and go up 3-0 in the decider. Fognini had his chances at 2-4 in the set, but clutch serving by the Russian saw him clinching the set 6-2 and making the final eight.

Carreno Busta On A Strong Run

It has been a good season for the world number 11 from Spain, Pablo Carreno Busta. He has a 17-4  record on clay winning at the ATP 250 in Marbella and the ATP 500 in Hamburg week before last. A two time UIS Open semi-finalist the Spaniard is no stranger to the hard courts either.

Coming into the Olympics confident, Carreno Busta beat American Tennys Sandgren comfortably in the opener and then came back from a set down to win against veteran Marin Cilic in three tight sets.

In a battle of attrition, the Spaniard played German Dominik Koepfer in the round of 16 with the hot conditions not bothering either.  It was a tight first set which Carreno Busta claimed 9-7 in the tiebreak and then broke early in the second to clinch the match 6-3 in the second with some clinical serving.

The Spaniard world number 11 looks in good form and is handling the conditions well and be a tough opponent for world number two Daniil Medvedev.

Medvedev v Carreno Busta Prediction and Tip

Although Medvedev starts as a favorite on paper, the hot conditions have already bothered him, as was evident in the grueling round of 16 against Fognini. On the other hand, Carreno Busta has looked in good touch, is gritty by nature and the conditions have not gotten the better of him.

Expect the Spaniard to pull off the win against a tired Medvedev in two tight sets.

Tip: Carreno Busta to win in straight sets: 6/4 (Click Here to Bet with bet365)
