The players have met on five occasions with Carreno Busta leading the head-to-head 3-2.  Their last meeting was at Monte Carlo this year on the clay and the Spaniard won in straight sets comfortably.

Carreno Busta Run Continues With Crucial Win Over Medvedev

It has been a good season for the world number 11 from Spain, Pablo Carreno Busta. He had a 17-4  record on clay winning at the ATP 250 in Marbella and the ATP 500 in Hamburg week before last. A two time US Open semi-finalist; the Spaniard is no stranger to the hard courts either.

Coming into the Olympics confident, Carreno Busta beat American Tennys Sandgren comfortably in the opener and then came back from a set down to win against veteran Marin Cilic in three tight sets.

In a battle of attrition, the Spaniard played German Dominik Koepfer in the round of 16 with the hot conditions not bothering either.  It was a tight first set which Carreno Busta claimed 9-7 in the tiebreak and then broke early in the second to clinch the match 6-3 in the second with some clinical serving.

Handling the heat and the conditions better than most he came in confident against world number two Daniil Medvedev who won a tight three setter the previous day against Fabio Fognini struggling in the conditions.

The Spaniard was off to a strong start winning the first set 6-2 and despite a more evenly fought second set, he prevailed in the tiebreak 7-5 to win the match in straight sets and enter the medal rounds at the Olympics.

Khachanov Hits Good Form In Tokyo

Russian Next Gen Karen Khachanov was once ranked number eight in the world and after winning the Masters 1000 at the Paris Masters in 2018 and being a French Open quarter-finalist in 2019, his level and consistency have dropped and he is ranked just within the top 25 in the world now.

With a disappointing second round loss at the French Open, and early losses at Halle and Mallorca on the grass, the Russian came to the grass swing without much hope or belief.

He had a good run at the All England Lawn Tennis Club making the final eight, winning crucial matches against the likes of Frances Tiafoe and Sebastian Korda before falling short in the final eight against Denis Shapovalov in a tight five-setter.

The Russian has continued his inspired run this week winning tight three setters against the likes of Yoshihito Nishioka, Diego Schwartzman and Ugo Humbert increasing immensely in self-confidence in every round and setting himself well for the biggest achievement of his career thus far, i.e. an Olympics medal.

Carreno Busta v  Prediction and Tip

Both players have looked good this week and come through some confidence seeking matches with victories. It will be down to who is the better player on the day. Expect both players to give their best at a shot at a first Olympics final, but the more experienced and consistent Carreno Busta should prevail in a tight three-setter.
