Alize Cornet v Mayar Sherif Head to Head

The two have never met previously.

Cornet a Top Contender

Stringing two wins together has been a problem for Alize Cornet this season, with the former No. 11 making early exits from most of the tournaments that she featured in.

A notable exception was her stunning performance in Berlin, where she defeated Amanda Anisimova, third seed Bianca Andreescu and sixth seed Garbine Muguruza on her way to the semifinals, before falling to fifth seed Belinda Bencic.

Another occasion when she won two consecutive matches was in Charleston, but there her run ended in the Round of 16. So overall it hasn’t been the most productive year for the 31-year-old Frenchwoman, and she is coming off a disappointing campaign in Tokyo, where she lost in the first round to Karolina Pliskova and couldn’t go beyond the second round in the doubles event.

The four-time Olympian now returns to the surface where she has had the least success this year (3-5 in the main draw on clay), but a lot could change by the end of the tournament. She is the top seed and would be looking to add to her previous six WTA titles, three of which came on clay.

Sherif Can Be a Difficult Player to Beat on Clay

Sherif’s been a solid performer on clay courts as well and 12 finals on the surface, including six titles at the ITF level, are a proof of that.

Most recently, the Egyptian, ranked 121st in the world, played at the ITF Montpelier final earlier this year, but fell to Anhelina Kalinina.

She made history last year by becoming the first Egyptian woman to reach the main draw of a Grand Slam, when she made it to the French Open. This year, she went a step ahead winning her first round match at the Australian Open.

Sherif also looked good at the WTA 125 in Bastad, reaching the quarterfinals. So she has taken little steps to impress in her young career and it seems only a matter of time when she starts producing results on the big stage on a consistent basis.

Cornet v Sherif Prediction and Tip
