Alison Riske v Coco Vandeweghe Head to Head

Riske and Vandeweghe have played each other 11 times before this. That run stretches back to their first meeting on the ITF circuit in 2008. The 148th-ranked Vandeweghe has a 7-4 lead overall, but at tour-level it is a lot closer –  Riske trailing 3-2. However, the pair have not played since 2018.

Riske Looks For Head Start

All is not lost for Alison Riske who seeks a dramatic turnaround in her 2021 season. Riske returns home for a busy period of hardcourt tennis, beginning with the Silicon Valley Classic where she will make her fifth main draw appearance.

Riske has won two matches all year – her lowest return at tour-level in nearly a decade. And last week’s demoralizing defeat at the Olympic Games to Mihaela Buzarnescu condemned the American to five first-round exits from seven tournaments. By any stretch, that is a dreadful record particularly for a player who is ranked inside the world’s top 40.

Seeded ninth this week, the 31-year-old Pittsburg native last tasted victory on hard courts at the US Open last September when she beat Tatiana Maria. But aside from the extra incentive of performing at home and the hope of returning to winning ways, Riske has been in this position before.

In 2019 she was 1-8 at the start of the grass-court season. But surged to win an ITF event in Surbiton, won her second WTA title in Den Bosch – saving five match points in the final, and reached the quarterfinals of a Grand Slam at Wimbledon.

Riske reached the semifinals in San Jose back in 2016, scaling past Vandeweghe in the process (albeit via a retirement).

Vandeweghe Overcomes Injury Woes

It seems a distant memory from the last time we saw Coco Vandeweghe reach the peak of her powers. But it is easier to recall the real Vandeweghe being unleashed in the Australian summer in 2017.

With a powerful serve and bludgeoning groundstrokes, she stormed to her first Grand Slam semifinal with memorable victories over the likes of Garbine Muguruza and Angelique Kerber.

But things didn’t go as planned the following season when she suffered a foot injury that was diagnosed as Complex Regional Pain Syndrome – a chronic pain that results from foot/arm injuries.

Vandeweghe was reduced to rely on her protected ranking status to play top-level tennis in 2020. She had exited the top 100 at the end of 2019 as a result of being injury-prone and her inability to win adequate matches. The 29-year-old sparked into life in Birmingham less than two months ago, streaking to the semifinals as a qualifier.

A few weeks later, she won her first Grand Slam match since the 2018 French Open.

Vandeweghe has activated her protected ranking as she makes her seventh main draw appearance in San Jose. With two runner-up finishes, she remains one of the most decorated players in the tournament’s history.

Riske v Vandeweghe Prediction and Tip

Vandeweghe has spoken fondly of her darkest days of injury hell, that she even contemplated quitting tennis. But she produced spasmodic moments of brilliance on the grass this season. Given Riske’s struggles (just two wins all year), we are backing Vandeweghe to master the upset over the number nine seed.
