Mayar Sherif v Kristina Kucova Head to Head

25-year-old Mayar Sherif brings a 3-1 winning record against Friday’s opponent. All four meetings before this were contested on ITF circuit, with the Egyptian winning their most recent match in Charleston in 2020.

Sherif Overwhelms Teenager Eala

Mayar Sherif saw a window of opportunity after registering a stunning upset over the top seed Alize Cornet in the first round. That victory was incidentally her biggest, ranking-wise.

Sherif then broke new ground when she knocked out the 16-year-old Alex Eala – the young Filipino wild card – to become the first Egyptian to make a WTA quarterfinal. Sherif won 6-2 6-2 in just 72 minutes to progress, and it marked the second time this season she had won back-to-back matches on tour.

Teenager Eala had won a topsy turvy opening match against Argentina’s Paula Ormaechea –  her first on the WTA tour – but was second best for the majority of this contest. She served as many as eight double faults (six in the opening set) and was broken twice in each set.

While Sherif is largely a regular on tour, at 25 she was vastly experienced in controlling the tempo as compared to her 16-year-old opponent. The Egyptian fired six aces, won 69% first-serve points, and dropped just six points behind her second serve to cruise into the last eight.

Kucova Digs Deep to Beat Irina Bara

Kristina Kucova needed a little over three hours to beat Irina Bara in another pulsating three-setter at the Winners Open. Just a week ago in Gdynia, the pair were involved in a high-octane second-round match in which the Slovak triumphed 6-4 in the decider.

Kucova would go on to play the longest match of 2021 in the quarterfinals in Poland – beating Ekaterine Gorgodze in nearly four hours of breathless tennis, and went all the way to the final where she lost to an inspired Maryna Zanevska.

And in playing her third straight clay tournament after Wimbledon, the 31-year-old has shown little signs of caving into younger opponents.

The Slovakian eighth seed took out local favorite Bara 2-6 7-6 7-6, and was visibly emotional at the end of it all. Kucova made a slow start in the first set in which she was broken three times, but recovered to win two tiebreaks, and saving seven out of 13 breakpoints.

Sherif v Kucova Prediction and Tip

Sherif has secured two solid wins this week including a major upset over top-seeded Frenchwoman Alize Cornet. Kucova has been involved in some lengthy matches of late, but her weight of shots and her ability to hold off her nerves in key moments has taken her to this stage again. However, Sherif looks to be playing some inspired tennis this week and should have fresher legs if this match goes the distance.
