Ranked No. 17 in the world, Mertens added to her five previous WTA titles by winning the Gippsland Trophy earlier this year – her fourth hard-court title. Later, she also reached the final in Istanbul, only to finish runner-up in the clay court event.

A 2018 Australian Open semifinalist, Mertens reached the quarterfinals of the U.S. Open in back-to-back years in 2019 and 2020 and is looking set for another solid North American hard court season.

In San Jose, the 25-year-old defeated Kristina Mladenovic and Yulia Putintseva in the Round of 16 and the quarterfinals respectively, but running into Kasatkina. Mertens was also a semifinalist in Dubai and a quaretrfinalist in Madrid this year.

Giorgi has played in eight finals, seven of which have been on hard courts, winning the title in Linz in 2018. Her only other title came on the grass courts of ‘s-Hertogenbosch in 2015.
