Marin Cilic v Albert Ramos Vinolas Head to Head

This has been a solid rivalry which has seen seven previous meetings and Cilic only holds a minor 4-3 advantage over Ramos Vinolas. Their last meeting came on the hard courts of Shanghai Masters in 2019 where Ramos-Vinolas won in straight sets.

Clay-Courter Ramos Vinolas Hoping for Hard Court Turnaround

Here’s a 33-year-old journeyman who won his third career title this season, and not surprisingly, it came on the clay courts of Estoril.

Such has been Ramos Vinolas’ love with the surface, he has barely played on any other this season, and when he has, he has lost all but one of those matches. Essentially, he is 1-6 on win-loss at the moment on the hard + grass court combo in 2021.

In fact, his last win on non-clay surfaces came at the start of the season, when he won his opening round encounter at the Murray River Open in February. Since then, there have been six successive defeats for the Spaniard.

He now takes on a player against whom he has done well but given his own form on hard court surfaces, it does look like a difficult proposition.

Cilic Hoping to Build on Grass Form

It wasn’t quite going his way before Cilic entered the grass swing but a change in fortunes on that surface should help his confidence coming into this US Open Series.

By winning the Stuttgart Open title, it became his first in three years before he made it to the quarterfinals at Queen’s and appeared in the third round at Wimbledon. And even there, he pushed Daniil Medvedev to a fifth set before going down.

Unfortunately for Cilic, his hard court performances this season haven’t been up to the scratch. Other than a fourth round showing in Miami, he has lost openers at three other tournaments.

And at the Tokyo Olympics which ended last week, Cilic was sent out packing by Pablo Carreno-Busta in the second round.

This could turn out to be a keen contest given their history and Cilic’s recent hard court struggles.

Cilic v Ramos Vinolas Prediction and Tip

An intriguing contest in a lot of ways but one we believe Cilic should win. Might not quite be a straightforward victory though.
