Millman Found Some Form in Washington

Millman would have been hoping that finally winning his first senior ATP title in Kazakhstan last November would have been the prelude to more success on tour this year.

It has not gone according to plan though, so far, in what has been a disappointing season by the Australian’s usual standards.

There is still time though to improve on a record where, prior to last week,  the best he had managed to date in 2021 had been a third round appearance on the clay of Munich in May.

Another one in the field who played for their country at the Olympics, reaching the second round, he did offer suggestions that a return to form may be around the corner in Washington last week.

There he beat Elias Ymer and the big-serving American Reilly Opelka, before he went down to the rising American star Jenson Brooksby in straight sets.

Berankis Comes Through Qualifying in Toronto

The Lithuanian number one reached the third round of the French Open for the first time in June, but, rather than that providing a stepping stone for more success, instead he embarked on a losing run which was only ended in Washington last week.

There he beat Mitchell Kroeger of the USA, and then the Serb Miomir Kecmanovic, before his run was ended at the third-round stage by another American Steve Johnson.

Berankis world ranking was not high enough to earn him automatic entry into the main draw in Toronto, so he had to enter the qualifying competition first.

However, he safely navigated his passage through, beating first the Slovakian Norbert Gombos and then Emilio Gomez of Ecuador, both in straight sets, to earn his chance against Millman.
