Maria Sakkari v Veronika Kudermetova Head to Head

In their one and only meeting on the WTA Tour so far, Kudermetova was the winner. The match took place in the 2019 Istanbul Cup where Sakkari lost 3-6, 4-6.

Sakkari Cruises into Round Two

Maria Sakkari’s opening round match in the WTA Montreal was definitely less than demanding. Facing Marie Bouzkova, the number 11 seed was up 6-4. 3-1 before the Czech withdrew from the match due to fitness concerns.

In the second round, Sakkari will face a stern test against Kudermetova and in all fairness, she definitely seems ready for it. Currently ranked World No. 18 – her best singles ranking yet – the Greek has had a pretty impressive season so far, especially on hard courts.

At the start of the year, she reached the semis in WTA Abu Dhabi and Grampians Trophy, later followed by a similar run in the Miami Open. In these big events, Sakkari registered wins over several top 10 players like Naomi Osaka, Garbine Muguruza, and Angelique Kerber. She carried on the same form to clay and reached the semifinal once again – this time in the French Open after dispatching the likes of Sofia Kenin and Iga Swiatek.

Before arriving for the Canadian Open, Sakkari featured in the Olympics where she fell in the third round to Elina Svitolina.

Kudermetova Survives Putintseva

24-year-old Veronika Kudermetova is enjoying a terrific season herself with a couple of impressive results on the singles and doubles circuit. Here in Montreal, she started her campaign with a 1-6, 6-2, 6-4 win over Yulia Putintseva in the opener to reach the next round.

At the moment, the Russian is ranked world number 33 – just five places below her career-best ranking which she achieved in 2021. Interestingly, the drop came on account of her form taking a sharp toll in the last few tournaments. From French Open through to the Olympics, Kudermetova was beaten in the early rounds with her campaign in Olympics, Wimbledon, and Eastbourne ending in the first round itself.

That said, she showed a lot more promise in the first half of the season with a runner-up feat in Abu Dhabi (beating Elina Svitolina en route) and the title run-in Charleston Open (her first singles title of her career).

On the doubles circuit, she won the Istanbul Cup with Elise Mertens and settled for the runner-up trophy at Wimbledon with Elena Vesnina. The duo also achieved a fourth-place finish in the Summer Olympics.
