Aryna Sabalenka v Karolina Pliskova Head to Head

Sabalenka has a 2-1 lead, but Pliskova won their most recent matchup, beating the Belarusian in the semifinal of Wimbledon this year.

Sabalenka’s wins had come in Eastbourne and Cincinnati in 2018. Interestingly all three of their matches needed a third set to decide the winner.

Sabalenka notched her 38th win of the season as she dumped out compatriot and former World No. 1 Victoria Azarenka in the quarterfinal on Friday.

The World No. 3 served seven aces, broke her opponent five times and saved two of four break points to clinch the contest 6-2, 6-4 in 79 minutes and extend her head-to-head lead over Azarenka to 3-1. Sabalenka was the more aggressive of the two, striking 33 winners in the match and winning 74% of points on the first serve.

A 10-time winner on the tour, the 23-year-old is chasing her third title of the season. She won a titles in Abu Dhabi and Madrid and finished runner-up in Stuttgart. She was also extremely impressive at Wimbledon, reaching the semifinals of a major for the first time, but her dream run ended with Pliskova’s come-from-behind victory.

Playing in Montreal for the third time, this is her best-ever showing. She had a difficult start to the tournament, needing two hours and 25 minutes to beat Sloane Stephens 7-6 (7-4), 4-6, 6-4 in the second round, after receiving a first-round bye. But following the tough opening match, things have been relatively easy for the Belarusian. She outplayed the unheralded Canadian Rebecca Marino 6-1, 6-3 in the Round of 16 and then dominated the contest against Azarenka in the quarterfinal.

A massive challenge awaits her in the semifinal and if she can get past Pliskova, she will be in the box seat to win the final.

Pliskova Breezes Past Sorribes Tormo

She had to battle through the first set, but once she got that in the bag, there was no stopping Pliskova, who needed just 31 minutes to bagel Sara Sorribes Tormo in the second and clinch the quarterfinal match 6-4, 6-0.

The Spaniard got the first break to go 1-3 up, but the Czech broke back immediately, before they exchanged breaks once again over the next two games. It was Pliskova who got the decisive break of serve at 4-4 and then held on to close out the set. She dominated the second right from the start, and barring one difficult game, it was an easy sailing for the World No. 6.

The win improved Pliskova to 26-14 this year. She came close to winning two titles but fell in the final at Wimbledon and in Rome.

A Rogers Cup quarterfinalist in 2017 and 2019, Pliskova is into the semifinals in Montreal for the first time. She began her campaign by rallying past Donna Vekic in the second round and then knocked out Amanda Anisimova in straight sets in the Round of 16.
