Pavlyuchenkova In Decent Touch

It has been a very successful year for Pavlyuchenkova. The Russian, ranked number 17 in the world, finally ended her quarterfinal jinx in Grand Slams, reaching the final of the French Open after losing six major quarterfinals previously.

Pavlyuchenkova looked to be cruising to her maiden Grand Slam title after outplaying Barbora Krejcikova in the first set of the Roland Garros final, but couldn’t deliver the finishing touch, falling to the Czech in three.

Two months on, she paired with Andrey Rublev to win the mixed doubles gold at the Olympics. She was also dominating the singles event until she ran into Belinda Bencic in the quarterfinals. The Swiss not only won the contest in three sets but also went on to win the gold medal.

The 30-year-old Russian, who has been a consistent performer on all surfaces over her career, had a 5-8 start to the season but picked up pace at the Madrid Open, reaching the semifinals, before finishing runner-up in Paris.

A 12-time winner on the tour, Pavluyuchenkova hasn’t won a title since 2018, but the way she has been playing this year it won’t be surprise if she wins one soon. She has made multiple appearances in Cincinnati, reaching the semifinals in 2010 and finishing in the last eight in 2012 and 2015.

Pera’s Singles Form Has Been Iffy

Ranked 83rd in the world, Pera brings a 13-17 overall record into the tournament. The American hasn’t gone beyond the second round this year, winning seven main draw matches and making 10 first-round exits.

Most recently Pera was beaten by Anhelina Kalinina in the second round of the Hungarian Open, while Harriet Dart stopped her in the first qualifying round in Montreal this week.

Having received a wild card for the tournament, Pera will be making a third appearance in Cincinnati. She lost in the first round in 2019, but beat Heather Watson to reach the second round last year only to fall to Dayana Yastremska.

Clay has always been the most productive surface for the 26-year-old, who tends to struggle on hard surfaces. She will have to punch much above her weight to stun Pavlyuchenkova in the opener on her least favourite surface.

Pavlyuchenkova v Pera Prediction and Tip

This should be a one-way traffic with Pavlyuchenkova dominating the contest. Expect the Russian to advance with ease.
