Red-hot Isner Will Aim to Repeat 2013 Exploits

Ever since making a first-round exit from Wimbledon, Isner has displayed sensational form on the hard courts of the Americas. His last three tournaments: A semifinal appearance in Los Cabos, title success in Atlanta and another semifinal in Toronto.

Overall, he comes to Cincinnati with a 20-8 record in 2021, and he is 11-2 from his last 13 matches.

His wins in Los Cabos and Atlanta may have come against lower-ranked players, but those two tournaments helped him get into a rhythm that earned him success against seeded players in Toronto.

Isner defeated 13th seed Cristian Garin for the first time in his career; then extended his head-to-head dominance over Andrey Rublev, by toppling the fourth seed in the Round of 16. In the quarterfinals, he took out the 11th seed Gael Monfils, but was outclassed by the top seed Daniil Medvedev in the semifinal.

The American will be playing in Cincinnati for the 14th time in his career. He has an 18-13 record in the tournament, with his best coming in 2013, when he defeated World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals and then No. 7 Juan Martin Del Potro in the semifinals but lost a closely-contested final to Rafael Nadal. Four years on, he made it to the semifinals, but his run ended with a defeat to Grigor Dimitrov.

Is Norrie Losing Momentum?

Before the start of the season, Norrie had reached just one final in Auckland in 2019. Come 2021 and the Briton has touched new heights, reaching four finals, winning his first career title and peaking to a career-high ranking of 29. What’s more, he has produced results on all surfaces.

Norrie reached two finals on clay in Estoril and Lyon, and also finished runner-up on grass at Queen’s. To top it all, he won his maiden title on the hard courts of Los Cabos last month.

But ever since that triumph, the lefty has lost a bot of momentum, going 2-3 from his previous three tournaments. He won one and lost one in Atlanta and Washington and made a first-round exit from the Canadian Open last week.

The Briton, who is 37-17, will be making a second main draw appearance in Cincinnati, having lost to Reilly Opelka in the first round last year.

Isner v Norrie Prediction and Tip

Norrie has been at his best this season, but given how the two have performed over the last three weeks, Isner definitely holds the edge. Expect the big American to advance into the next round.
