Denis Shapovalov v Benoit Paire Head to Head

Paire holds a 2-1 edge in this rivalry. Shapovalov won the first contest in Madrid in 2018, while Paire won the next two, winning at Wimbledon in 2018 and in Lyon in 2019.

Shapovalov on a Three-Match Losing Skid

He was brilliant at this year’s Wimbledon Championships, reaching a Grand Slam semifinal for the first time in his career. But ever since his defeat to Novak Djokovic in that semifinal, Shapovalov is yet to register a win. He was stunned by Vit Kopriva at the Swiss Open and was outplayed by Frances Tiafoe at home last week.

The Canadian has a 22-16 record this year, thanks largely to an 8-3 grass season. Ranked No. 10 in the world, the 22-year-old left-hander, who won his only career title in Stockholm in 2019, reached a third career final in Geneva this year, only to finish runner-up to Filip Krajinovic.

His most notable performance on hard court this season was a run to the semifinals in Dubai, where he fell in a dramatic three-setter to Loyd Harris.

Into his fourth tournament in Cincinnati, Shapovalov will aim to get back to his elements soon.

Paire Fights Back to Eliminate Kecmanovic

Benoit Paire came back from a set down to knock out Serbia’s Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round on Monday. The 32-year-old Frenchman served up 11 aces and broke his opponent five times in the match for a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win.

Paire had a terrible time for most parts of the season, but since July, he has got a few wins under his belt. Luck played its part as well, as a couple of mid-match withdrawals helped him reach the quarterfinals in Hamburg and Gstaad. And then he won his first round matches in Atlanta and Toronto in the North American swing.

Ranked No. 50 in the world, Paire is playing in his ninth Cincinnati Open, and it’s the fourth time that he has won his first round contest. Interestingly, he has never cleared the second round obstacle in Cincy and with Shapovalov next, the chances of making the third round this time don’t look too bright either.

Monday’s win improved him to 9-22 this season, and that record looks much better than the 2-17 start he had till Wimbledon.

Shapovalov v Paire Prediction and Tip

Paire is slowly getting back to winning ways, and will test a struggling Shapovalov. But given the Canadian’s class he should return to form soon and it could start with a win on Tuesday. Expect Shapovalov to advance to the next round.
